For a long, agonizing moment, the only sound on the driveway was the dripping of water and Lily's soft whimpering. Matthew stared at his daughter's feet, firmly planted on the concrete. For over a year, he had carried her, dressed her, and spent his life savings on specialists who all claimed her paralysis was a psychological reaction to trauma. Vanessa watched them, her arms crossed. "She’s been walking for at least three months, Matthew," she said, her voice dropping its harsh edge, revealing a deep, underlying exhaustion. "I caught her sneaking down to the kitchen in the middle of the night. I tried to tell you, but you were always too blinded by guilt to listen."

Matthew looked from his wife to his daughter, his mind spinning. "Lily... why?" he whispered, his heart breaking in a completely new way. "Why would you do this to me? To us?"

Lily fell to her knees, not from weakness, but from the sheer weight of her tears. "I had to, Daddy! I had to!" she sobbed, burying her face in her hands. "If I didn't, Mommy said she would take me away from you forever."

The mention of his ex-wife, Sarah, sent a chill down Matthew's spine. Sarah had lost custody after a bitter battle, but she had never stopped trying to find a way back into Matthew's deep pockets. Vanessa stepped forward, pulling a small digital voice recorder from her pocket. She pressed play, and Sarah's sharp, manipulative voice filled the air.

"If you walk, Lily, your father won't have to pay for your treatments anymore. He won't need me to sign the insurance papers, and I'll tell the judge he's an unfit father. I'll take you to another country, and you'll never see him again. Just stay in the chair."

Matthew listened, his blood turning to ice as the depth of the betrayal sunk in.
