Previously: When a panicked young woman sells a worn gold locket for fifty dollars, a lonely jeweler opens it and discovers a shocking photo of his long-lost daughter inside.

A Bitter Truth

Robert did not think about his open cash register or the unlocked door of his expensive store. He simply ran. His polished leather shoes slapped hard against the concrete sidewalk as he pushed through startled pedestrians. Ahead of him, the olive green jacket was a beacon in the gray winter crowd. He saw her glance back, her eyes widening in terror when she realized he was pursuing her. She accelerated, but her panic overcame her; she tripped over a raised section of pavement, tumbling hard onto the cold ground.

Robert reached her in seconds, panting heavily, his chest burning. He knelt beside her, reaching out, but she recoiled, shielding her face with her arms.

"Please don't hurt me! I didn't steal it, I swear! It was my mother's!" she sobbed.
"I don't care about the money," Robert gasped, his tears finally breaking free. "Your mother... Chloe? Who are you? Where is she?"

The girl froze, slowly lowering her arms. She stared at Robert, searching his lined face. When she saw the undeniable family resemblance in his eyes, her expression hardened from fear into pure resentment.

"You're Robert," she said, her voice dropping to a bitter whisper. "The father who abandoned her."

The words cut deeper than any blade. Robert shook his head desperately, explaining that he had searched for Chloe for years. He begged her to take him to his daughter. But Amanda’s next words shattered whatever hope he had left. Chloe had passed away three weeks prior, succumbing to a long illness. They had spent every penny on medical bills, leaving Amanda homeless and starving. The fifty dollars was her last resort to buy food.

Before Robert could process the devastating loss of his daughter, a sleek black sedan screeched to a halt at the curb. Two burly men in dark coats stepped out, their eyes locked on Amanda.

"There she is. Grab her," one of the men growled.

Amanda screamed, scrambling backward. The men were debt collectors, sent by the ruthless loan sharks who had funded Chloe's final, futile medical treatments.
