Previously: When David returned home early, he found his young daughter Lily cleaning the floors in tears. But the silver bracelet she held changed everything, exposing a dark family secret.

The Web of Lies

I gently took the silver bracelet from Lily's trembling hands. Turning it over, I squinted to read the tiny, hand-carved letters on the inside of the band. It wasn't just a simple dedication. It was a series of coordinates and a date—the exact date my father had passed away. "The truth lies beneath the hearth, where the fire never burns," the inscription concluded. My heart hammered against my ribs. My father had built this mansion, and he loved puzzles, but this was no game.

Victoria rushed down the stairs, her emerald dress rustling loudly. She grabbed my arm, her fingernails digging into my skin.

"David, this is ridiculous. Your father was senile at the end. He was throwing random trinkets around. We need to get Lily cleaned up and put that garbage away."
Her voice was high-pitched, laced with a desperation I had never heard before.

I pushed her hand away, standing up to my full height.

"If it’s garbage, Victoria, why are you shaking?"
I asked, my voice deadly quiet. I looked down at Lily, who was watching us with wide, frightened eyes. I realized then that my wife’s sudden cruelty toward my daughter wasn't about discipline. It was about intimidation. She was trying to keep Lily quiet.

I walked straight to the library, where the massive, disused stone fireplace stood. Victoria followed me, screaming threats, warning me that I was ruining our family. Ignoring her, I knelt by the hearth, searching the cold stone blocks. My fingers caught on a loose brick near the base. Pulling it free, I found a velvet pouch. Inside was a flash drive and a handwritten document—the genuine, unamended will of my father.

I opened the document, my eyes scanning the elegant script. My father had left the entire estate, the family business, and all his assets directly to Lily, with me acting as the sole trustee. Victoria had been completely written out. I turned to face my wife, who stood frozen in the doorway.

"You knew,"
I whispered, the betrayal cutting deeper than any physical wound.
"You found this, hid it, and forged the amendment."
