The silence that followed was suffocating. One of the police officers, Officer Davis, stepped forward, his hand resting casually near his belt. He looked between the two women, his expression professional but firm. He asked Brenda if she had any legal documentation proving her right to reside in the home. Brenda stammered, her hands trembling as she reached into her purse and pulled out a folded piece of notebook paper.

"He wrote this for me,"

Brenda pleaded, handing the paper to the officer.

"Grandfather Arthur told me I could have the house before he passed. He knew we were struggling. This is his signature!"

Clara felt a pang of anger. She took one look at the paper over the officer's shoulder. It was a poorly forged note, written in blue ink, claiming to bequeath the entire estate to Brenda. The handwriting was a shaky imitation of Arthur’s neat cursive, but the date was completely wrong. It was dated a week after Arthur had been admitted to the ICU, a time when he was completely unresponsive.

Officer Davis shook his head, looking at Clara’s notarized deed, which had been legally executed and recorded months before Arthur’s illness. Clara had cared for her grandfather in his final years, while Brenda had ignored his calls. The law was entirely on Clara's side. The officer turned back to Brenda, his tone softening but remaining resolute.

"Ma'am, this handwritten note is not a valid legal will, and it contradicts a registered deed. You are currently trespassing on private property. If you do not vacate the premises, we will have to escort you off."

Suddenly, Brenda’s defiant facade shattered. She collapsed onto the porch steps, burying her face in her hands. She began to sob, confessing the humiliating truth. Her family had lost their own home to mounting debts, and they had nowhere else to go. They had moved in secretly, hoping Clara wouldn't notice until they could figure out a plan.
