Claire tried to laugh off the accusation, her voice sounding forced and high-pitched. She stepped forward, reaching out a hand to soothe David. "David, darling, he’s just a child," she pleaded, her eyes darting nervously. "He’s confused about the wedding. You know Chloe’s diagnosis is psychological. I’ve done nothing but try to help her walk again."

But Toby was prepared. He pulled a small tablet from his backpack and tapped the screen, turning it to face his father. On the screen was a shaky video Toby had secretly recorded. It showed Claire standing in the kitchen, carefully crushing a blue pill and mixing it into Chloe’s morning orange juice. The video then cut to a scene from the previous afternoon. Chloe had stood up from her wheelchair to reach a stuffed animal on a high shelf. In the footage, Claire rushed into the room, slapped Chloe’s hand down, and forced her back into the chair.

David watched the screen, his blood running cold. The voice on the recording was unmistakably Claire’s, sharp and menacing, entirely different from the sweet woman he thought he knew.

"If you ever walk in front of your father, he won't need me anymore," Claire's recorded voice hissed. "And if he doesn't need me, we won't be a family. You want a mother, don't you? Then stay in that chair."

David looked down at Chloe. The ten-year-old girl was sobbing quietly, her shoulders shaking as she hid her face in her hands. "She told me the medicine made my legs feel heavy so I wouldn't make a mistake and walk," Chloe whispered, her voice barely audible. "I just wanted us to be happy."

The realization hit David like a physical blow. Claire, a pediatric physical therapist, had been using her medical knowledge to chemically induce muscle weakness in his daughter, all to play the role of the indispensable savior and trap David into marriage.
