Previously: When Sarah's husband insisted on a sudden, late-night subway ride, she sensed something was wrong. But she never expected her childhood friend to be standing right behind them, holding a terrifying secret.

A New Dawn

Out on the dimly lit platform, the cold air whipped through Sarah's hair, but her mind was suddenly burning with a fierce, unexpected clarity. She was tired of being afraid. She was tired of being manipulated. As Mark dragged her toward the dark exit stairs, his grip on his weapon tightened, his attention entirely focused on Ethan, who was slowly advancing, trying to keep Mark talking.

"Just let her go, Mark! The police are already on their way down," Ethan shouted, his voice echoing off the tiled walls. "It's over!"

"It's only over when I say it is!" Mark screamed back, momentarily taking his eyes off Sarah to aim his pocketed weapon directly at Ethan's chest.

In that split second of distraction, Sarah acted. She summoned every ounce of strength she had left, brought her heavy winter boot down onto Mark's instep, and simultaneously drove her elbow backward into his ribs. Mark gasped in pain, his grip loosening just enough for Sarah to wrench herself free. As she stumbled forward, she swung her heavy canvas duffel bag with all her might, striking Mark squarely across the face.

Mark stumbled backward, losing his footing on the slick platform. The gun slipped from his grip, clattering across the concrete. Before he could recover, the shadows of the supposedly empty station suddenly erupted with movement. Flashlights cut through the darkness as half a dozen undercover transit officers rushed from the stairwells, pinning Mark to the ground before he could even reach for his fallen weapon.

Ethan ran to Sarah, wrapping his arms around her as she finally collapsed into tears of relief. As the officers handcuffed Mark, a detective walked over to Sarah, his expression sympathetic. He explained that Ethan had contacted them hours ago after discovering Mark’s fraudulent transactions. It turned out Mark was a serial con artist wanted in three states for marrying wealthy women, draining their trusts, and disappearing.

Sitting in the precinct later, drinking hot coffee with Ethan by her side, Sarah realized that her isolation was finally over. She had lost her marriage, but she had saved her life and rediscovered the true loyalty of a real friend. Sometimes, the people who claim to protect us from the world are the very ones we need protection from, and true love will always seek to set you free, never lock you in the dark.
