Previously: Seven months pregnant, my husband threw me out for his mistress. As I stood on the gravel, I made one call. Five minutes later, his world crashed down.

The Secret That Changed Everything

The document inside was a paternity test—dated six months ago. It listed Daniel’s name, and a child’s name: Lily Hartley. But I wasn’t the mother. I read it twice, three times, but the words didn’t change. Daniel had a daughter. A secret daughter.

“Who is Lily?” I demanded, my voice trembling. Daniel’s face crumpled. “She’s… she’s not mine, Emily. It’s a mistake.” But the lawyer shook his head. “The test was conducted by a court-appointed lab. There’s no mistake.”

I felt the floor tilt. My hand went to my belly. “You’ve been hiding a child from me? While I’m carrying yours?” Daniel stepped forward, reaching for me, but I flinched away. “Don’t touch me. Don’t you dare touch me.”

“Emily, listen,” he pleaded. “Lily’s mother passed away last year. I didn’t want to burden you. I was going to tell you after the baby was born.” But I saw the truth in his eyes—he was protecting himself, not me. He never planned to tell me.

I turned to the attorney. “Is this true? Is there more?” The lawyer hesitated. “There is one more thing. A trust fund, set up in Lily’s name, with a substantial sum—money that was never disclosed in your joint accounts.”

I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. “So you were hiding money for a secret child, while you kicked me out? While you moved your mistress into our home?” Daniel’s jaw tightened. “The mistress was a mistake. I ended it last week. She’s just… she’s just here to help.”

“Help? She was on the balcony, drinking my wine, watching me get thrown out!” I spat. The mistress appeared in the doorway, her face pale. “I didn’t know,” she said. “I didn’t know about any of this. He told me you were leaving voluntarily.”

“You’re lying,” I said. But something in her eyes made me pause. She looked at Daniel with a mix of fear and contempt. “He told me you were taking him for everything. He said you were the villain.”

I shook my head. “I’ve never taken anything from him. I gave him everything.” The mistress’s face contorted. “Then why is there a court order for his arrest?” She pointed to the papers in his hand. I hadn’t noticed the last page—a warrant.

Daniel’s eyes widened. “This is a mistake. I didn’t do anything.” The attorney stepped forward. “Mr. Hartley, you’ve been accused of embezzling company funds. The police are on their way.”

Daniel grabbed my arm. “Emily, you have to call them off. I’ll do anything. I’ll give you everything. Just don’t let them take me.” I looked at his hand on my arm, then up at his desperate face. “You should have thought about that before you threw me out.”

But as the sirens grew louder, I felt a tug of something—pity, maybe. I whispered, “Who is Lily’s mother?” Daniel’s eyes filled with tears. “Her name was Rachel. She was my first love. I never stopped loving her.”

The words hit me like a punch. I pulled my arm away. “Then you should have let me go years ago.” I turned and walked out of the house, leaving Daniel in the study, surrounded by lawyers and the sound of approaching police.
