My Husband Said He Couldn't Pretend Anymore, but the Truth Was Far Worse
A Midnight Whisper
The house was dead silent, save for the rhythmic, low hum of the refrigerator downstairs. Lauren shifted in bed, her arm reaching out instinctively to feel the warmth of her husband, Robert. But his side of the mattress was cold, the sheets undisturbed. Frowning, she glanced at the glowing digital clock on the nightstand: 2:14 AM. Robert had been working late hours, but tonight he had promised to be in bed early.
Slipping out of the covers, Lauren walked out into the carpeted hallway. As she approached the guest bedroom where Robert’s mother, Margaret, had been staying for the past six months, she noticed a sliver of warm light spilling onto the floorboards. The double doors were slightly cracked, and the muffled sound of low voices drifted through the opening.
Lauren hesitated. Margaret’s health had been failing, and Robert had been carrying the weight of the world on his shoulders. She didn't want to intrude, but something in the tone of their voices made her stop. It wasn't the sound of a son comforting his ailing mother; it was a tone of desperate, suffocating exhaustion.
Pressing her face close to the gap, Lauren peered inside. The vintage bedside lamp cast a dim, amber glow across the room. Robert was sitting on the edge of the mattress, his head buried in his hands, while Margaret sat propped up against her pillows. When Robert finally looked up, his face was pale, his eyes rimmed with red.
"I can't do this anymore, mom," Robert whispered, his voice cracking with emotion. "I don't know how long I can keep pretending."
A tear slipped down Lauren’s cheek, hot and stinging. Her chest tightened as she watched. What was he pretending? Was their entire marriage a lie?
"Lower your voice," Margaret urged softly, reaching out to touch his arm. "You'll wake her."
Robert stared at his mother, his jaw tight with a mixture of anger and sorrow.
"Maybe it's time she wakes up," he replied bitterly.
