Previously: When Clara's snobbish sister-in-law, Evelyn, humiliated her by making her scrub a spill in her own home, she didn't realize Clara's husband Arthur owned the entire estate.

The Revelation

Evelyn's hand began to shake, almost spilling the remaining wine in her glass. She laughed nervously, trying to brush off her brother's icy demeanor. "Arthur, stop playing around," she stammered, stepping toward him. "What do you mean 'cancel everything'? I live here! You can't just throw me out because of some clumsy maid!"

Arthur didn't flinch. He walked past his sister, completely ignoring her outstretched hand. He knelt down onto the wet marble floor, ignoring the dampness seeping into his expensive suit, and gently took the rag from Clara's hand. He pulled her up, wrapping his arm protectively around her waist.

blockquote>"She is not a maid, Evelyn," Arthur said, his voice echoing off the high marble walls. "She is my wife."

The words hit Evelyn like a physical blow. She stumbled backward, her eyes darting between Arthur's protective stance and Clara's stained white dress. "Your... your wife?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "But you said you were marrying a woman of standing! A woman from a respectable family!"

Arthur's grip on Clara tightened. "Clara has more grace, dignity, and kindness in her little finger than you have in your entire body," he growled. "We were married two weeks ago. This dinner was supposed to be her welcome to the family. But you showed me exactly how you treat people you think are beneath you."

Before Evelyn could speak, Arthur's phone buzzed. He put it on speaker. The voice of his chief financial officer filled the room.

blockquote>"Sir, the trust fund accounts under Evelyn's name have been frozen. The eviction notice is being processed as we speak. She has sixty minutes to vacate the premises."

Evelyn dropped her wine glass. It shattered on the marble floor, splashing red droplets across her designer gown. She fell to her knees, sobbing desperately, realizing her entire life of luxury was vanishing in a single second.
