Previously: When Victoria hired a young maid to clean her luxury mansion, she never expected the girl to look at her wealthy husband and tearfully whisper 'Dad.'

The Hidden Past Unravels

Victoria demanded an explanation, her heart hammering violently against her ribs. She had known Thomas for nearly two decades, or at least, she thought she did. Now, looking at his pale, terrified face, she realized there was a stranger standing in her foyer.

"Thomas, answer me right now," she commanded, stepping directly between her husband and the sobbing maid. "Why did she just call you 'Dad'?"

Thomas swallowed hard, his hands shaking as he finally set his briefcase down on a nearby console table. He refused to look Chloe in the eye, his gaze darting around the room as if searching for an escape route.

"She's... she's mistaken, Victoria," Thomas stammered, his voice thin and unconvincing. "I've never seen this girl before in my life. She must be confused, or perhaps she's trying to scam us. I will call the agency immediately."

But Chloe stood up, her maid's uniform damp with soapy water. She wiped her eyes with the back of her sleeve and looked directly at Thomas with a mixture of deep pain and fierce determination. She was no longer trembling.

"I am not confused, Thomas," Chloe said, her voice shaking but clear. "My mother was Sarah Jenkins. Do you remember her? Or did you completely erase her from your memory when you walked out on us twenty-two years ago to marry into wealth?"

Victoria felt the world tilt beneath her feet. The name Sarah Jenkins didn't mean anything to her, but the absolute terror in her husband's eyes told her everything she needed to know. The wealthy, respectable man she had married had a secret past—and an abandoned child.

Chloe reached into her pocket and pulled out a faded, folded photograph. She held it out to Victoria. It showed a young, smiling Thomas holding a newborn baby girl, standing next to a beautiful auburn-haired woman who looked exactly like Chloe.

"My mother passed away last year," Chloe whispered, tears spilling over again. "She never asked you for a dime, even when we were starving. I didn't come here for your money, Thomas. I just wanted to look the man who abandoned us in the eye."
