Previously: After losing his sight in a sudden accident, Richard thought his devoted wife was his only savior—until his little stepdaughter whispered a chilling secret about his daily tea.

The Poison in the Cup

The gentle clinking of a ceramic cup against a saucer signaled Evelyn’s return. I forced my face into a mask of calm, though my pulse was racing like a runaway train. Evelyn’s voice was as sweet and comforting as ever as she approached the bench.

"Here is your tea, darling," she said softly, placing the warm cup into my trembling hands. "Drink up while it's hot. It will help with your headaches."

Usually, I would have swallowed the herbal brew without hesitation. Now, the steam rising from the cup felt like a toxic vapor. I brought the cup close to my face, pretending to inhale the aroma while my mind scrambled for an escape. Maya’s warning echoed in my mind, locking my throat in fear. I couldn't drink it, but I couldn't let Evelyn know I suspected her either.

"I'll set it down for a moment, sweetheart," I said, trying to keep my voice steady. "My stomach feels a bit uneasy today."

A heavy silence fell over the patio. Evelyn didn't move. I could feel her intense gaze boring into me, analyzing my every micro-expression. The warmth in her voice vanished, replaced by a cold, demanding tone that I had never heard before.

"No, Richard. You need to drink it now. It's good for you," she insisted, reaching out and pushing the cup back toward my lips.

Her sudden insistence confirmed my worst fears. In a panic, I feigned a clumsy movement, flinging my arm out and knocking the cup from her hand. It shattered against the brick floor, splashing the dark liquid everywhere. Evelyn let out a sharp gasp of anger before quickly recovering her gentle facade, apologizing and heading back inside for a towel. Taking a massive risk, I dipped my finger into a puddle of the spilled tea on the bench and wiped it inside a small plastic baggie I found in my pocket, determined to have it tested.
