While waiting for the paramedics to arrive, Emily was a hysterical mess. She cradled her mother’s head, relieved to find that Ruth was still breathing, though she was drifting in and out of consciousness. Michael finally moved, stumbling down the remaining intact steps, his face pale and sweating profusely. He tried to comfort Emily, but his voice shook with an intensity that felt like more than just worry.

"It was an accident, Emily! I swear, I fixed those steps! The wood must have had internal rot I couldn't see!" Michael stammered, his eyes darting away.

Desperate to call the hospital, Emily realized her own phone was inside. She grabbed Michael's phone from his hand. As she unlocked it, a series of urgent text notifications popped up on the screen. They were from a local sports betting app, confirming a series of massive losses totaling over fourteen thousand dollars. Emily’s heart stopped. Just last month, Ruth had handed Michael fifteen thousand dollars in cash—her hard-earned savings—to hire licensed contractors to completely rebuild the aging, dangerous porch.

Emily looked up from the screen, her eyes moving slowly to the splintered debris. She picked up a broken chunk of the stair. It wasn't new wood at all. It was the same thirty-year-old, termite-ridden pine, hastily covered with a thick layer of dark brown stain to make it look freshly renovated. Michael hadn't hired anyone. He had pocketed her mother’s safety fund to cover his gambling debts, leaving an elderly woman to walk on a ticking time bomb.
