The grand entry hall of the whispering mansion felt colder than usual. Sunlight streamed through the high stained-glass windows, casting long, dramatic shadows across the polished marble floor. Arthur stood near the base of the ornate winding staircase, his chest heaving with a mixture of confusion and boiling anger. In his arms, his four-year-old son, Noah, sobbed softly, burying his tear-stained face into his father's shoulder. Arthur's grip was tight, protective, and desperate.

A Sudden Dismissal

At the center of the hall stood Sarah, their quiet, auburn-haired maid. She was dressed in her classic black and white uniform, but her usual poise was entirely gone. She was trembling, clutching a tarnished silver pocket watch to her chest as if her life depended on it. On the staircase above them, looking down like an unimpeachable queen, was Eleanor. Arthur’s mother adjusted her pristine pearl necklace, her expression cold and unyielding.

"Why did you fire her?" Arthur demanded, his voice echoing off the high ceilings. "He loves her!"

Eleanor didn't flinch. She took a slow, deliberate step down the stairs, her heels clicking sharply against the wood.

"Because she lied from the day she entered this house," Eleanor replied coldly, her eyes drilling into the weeping maid. "She is a fraud, Arthur, and I will not have thieves and liars under my roof."

A choked sob escaped Sarah’s lips. She looked up at Arthur, her eyes red and brimming with tears. She shook her head frantically, stepping forward despite Eleanor's glaring warning.

"I didn't steal anything, Arthur! I swore I wouldn't tell you, but I can't let her do this anymore," Sarah cried, her voice cracking with raw emotion. "Celeste was my sister."

The name hung in the air like a sudden clap of thunder. Celeste. Arthur’s late wife, who had passed away three years ago under what he had always been told were tragic, unpreventable circumstances. Arthur felt the world tilt beneath his feet. He stared at the maid, his voice barely a whisper.

"Tell me the truth," he pleaded, his heart hammering against his ribs.

Sarah took a shuddering breath, glancing fearfully at Eleanor, who was now rushing down the stairs to intervene.

"Your mother kept Noah's..." Sarah whispered, her voice trembling violently just before Eleanor grabbed her arm.
