The Starlight Grand Hotel lobby, usually a beacon of opulence, was now a stage for a desperate drama. Outside, a midnight thunderstorm raged, the sky tearing open with violent flashes of lightning and the earth-shaking rumble of thunder. Rain hammered against the colossal atrium windows, blurring the city lights into abstract streaks of color. Inside, the air was thick with the scent of expensive perfume and the faint aroma of stale coffee. Towering gilded columns reached towards the heavens, reflecting the warm glow of massive crystal chandeliers onto the impossibly glossy Carrara marble floors. Amidst this grandeur stood Ruth Miller, a frail 76-year-old woman, her posture a testament to a life of hardship and her weathered skin etched with the deep lines of sorrow. Her silver curls were softly styled, but her arthritic hands trembled uncontrollably as she clutched a steaming paper cup. Tucked away in her worn cardigan pocket was an eviction notice, a cruel irony against the backdrop of such luxury. Looming over her was Carter Ross, her landlord, a man whose arrogance radiated from his sharp, tailored suit and predatory sneer. He was the embodiment of ruthless ambition, standing tall and dismissive.
