The Reunion

The air in the airport's VIP lounge was thick with the scent of expensive scotch and the low hum of hushed conversations. Outside, torrential rain lashed against the floor-to-ceiling windows, distorting the golden tarmac lights into a shimmering, impressionistic blur. It was a scene of opulent isolation, a sanctuary for the elite, and tonight, it was the stage for a reckoning a decade in the making. Gregory Thorne, still the picture of aristocratic arrogance in his immaculate navy pinstripe cashmere suit, diamond cufflinks glinting under the soft lighting, swirled a crystal tumbler of top-shelf scotch. His gaze, sharp and predatory, found me. He sneered, a familiar, venomous curl of the lip. He pointed a perfectly manicured finger towards the rain-streaked glass, towards the pathetic sight of a beat-up yellow taxi idling on the curb below. "Ten years later, Thomas," he drawled, his voice dripping with condescension, "and you still arrive in a thirty-dollar cab while I own the terminal." He chuckled, a dry, rasping sound that grated on my nerves. I stood opposite him, my modest, rain-dampened charcoal wool trench coat a stark contrast to his tailored perfection. My leather oxfords were scuffed, evidence of a life lived outside these gilded cages. But my resolve was as solid as the marble beneath my feet. My jaw was set, my gaze unwavering, the quiet intensity of years of suppressed fury burning in my eyes. I said nothing, letting his words hang in the air, a testament to his own insecurity.

"Some vehicles are built to stay invisible, Gregory."

As he tilted his head back for another bout of self-satisfied laughter, I took a measured step forward, moving into the spotlight cast by the grand chandelier above. My hazel eyes locked onto his, holding him captive. His laughter died in his throat, the smug smirk stiffening into a mask of defensive irritation. He hadn't expected me to retaliate, let alone with such icy calm. The silence stretched, thick with unspoken history and dawning realization on his part. The casual cruelty he'd dished out was suddenly met with an unnerving stillness. He realized the man he'd tried to destroy was no longer the easy target he remembered. The game had changed, and the rules were about to be rewritten by me.
