Previously: When Marta smashed the bottle, the milk turned green. My sister had already filed for guardianship. I had to uncover the truth before I lost my son forever.

The Truth in the Courtroom

On the morning of the hearing, I stood in front of my mirror, trying to steady my hands. I had dressed in my best suit, the one I had worn to my husband's funeral. I needed to look strong, even if I didn't feel it.

Marta arrived early, holding a folder. “I have something for you,” she said.

“What is it?”

“A recording. From the night I saw Natalia with the bottle.”

I opened the folder. Inside was a phone, and on the screen, a video was playing. It showed Natalia, in the nursery, pouring something into a bottle of milk. I watched as she smiled, checked her watch, and then walked away.

“Why didn't you show me this before?” I asked.

“I was scared,” Marta said. “Scared of what she would do. But after what you told me about the cyanide, I knew I had to.”

I hugged her, tears streaming down my face. “Thank you.”

We drove to the courthouse together. As we walked inside, I saw Natalia already seated at the plaintiff's table, dressed in black, looking like a widow. She smiled at me, but it was cold and practiced.

The judge called the case. My lawyer stood, ready to present my defense. But before he could speak, the courtroom doors opened.

It was Marta, holding the phone.

“Your Honor,” she said, her voice steady, “I have evidence that directly contradicts the accusations against Isabel Hart.”

The judge raised an eyebrow. “What kind of evidence?”

Marta walked forward and handed the phone to the judge. He watched the video, his face growing paler with each second.

“This video,” he said, “shows Natalia Hart adding an unknown substance to a bottle of milk in the victim's nursery. The date and time match the incident reported by the nanny.”

Natalia’s smile vanished. She turned to her lawyer, her eyes wide. “That's not what it looks like,” she said.

But the judge wasn't listening. “This changes everything,” he said. “Based on this evidence, I am dismissing the guardianship petition and ordering a full investigation into Natalia Hart's actions.”

I felt a weight lift off my shoulders, but I knew it wasn't over. Natalia was handcuffed and led away, but as she passed me, she leaned close and whispered, “You think you've won? Ask your mother about the night your husband died.”

I froze. My mother was dead. But she spoke as if she wasn't.

I turned to Marta, who was watching Natalia go. “What did she mean?”

Marta took a deep breath. “Isabel, I didn't tell you everything. Your mother didn't die of a stroke. She was killed.”

I felt the air leave my lungs. “Killed? By who?”

“By Natalia,” Marta said. “But she didn't do it alone.”

“Who helped her?”

Marta looked at me, her eyes filled with sorrow. “Your mother's lawyer. The same one who handled your husband's estate.”

I felt the pieces click into place. The lawyer who had called me about the guardianship. The lawyer who had been so eager to help Natalia.

“Why?” I asked.

“Because your mother was going to change her will,” Marta said. “She found out about the affair, and she was going to cut Natalia out. Natalia couldn't let that happen.”

I stood there, in the middle of the courtroom, as the bailiff led Natalia away. I had won this battle, but the war was far from over.

I went home that night, holding Noah in my arms. I had finally proven my innocence, but the cost was high. I had lost my sister, my mother, and the man I loved. All I had left was my son.

But as I looked at his little face, I knew that was enough. It had always been enough.

That night, I called the police and told them everything. They reopened the investigation into my mother's death, and within a week, they found evidence that Natalia had tampered with her medication. The lawyer was arrested too.

Natalia is now serving a sentence for attempted murder and fraud. The guardianship case was dismissed, and I was granted full custody of Noah, with no restrictions.

But the scars remain. I still wake up in the middle of the night, checking on Noah, making sure he's breathing. I still flinch when I hear glass breaking.

But I'm learning to heal. I've started seeing a therapist, and I've joined a support group for mothers who have faced similar battles. I've also started writing in a journal, trying to make sense of everything that happened.

Marta still works for me. She's more than a nanny now; she's family. She saved my son's life, and I will never forget that.

As for Natalia, I've forgiven her in my own way. Not for what she did, but for the pain that drove her to do it. She was a victim of my mother's secrets, just as I was. But that doesn't excuse her actions.

The last time I visited her in prison, she didn't say a word. She just sat there, staring at the wall. I left after a few minutes, knowing that some wounds are too deep to heal.

Now, as I watch Noah play in the backyard, I feel a sense of peace I haven't felt in years. He's healthy, he's happy, and he's mine.

The green milk is a memory now, a dark chapter in our family's history. But it taught me something important: the people we love can hurt us the most, but they can also teach us how strong we are.

I'm Isabel Hart, and I survived. And my son, Noah, is the reason I keep going.
