Previously: When Daniel hears his son's plea, he returns early to find his fiancée abusing the boy. A hidden key and a video reveal a conspiracy that threatens everything.

Confronting My Brother

I spent the next hour securing the house, calling my lawyer, and making sure Noah was safe with Grace by his side. Then I made a call I never thought I’d make. I phoned my brother Mark and told him to come over immediately. "It’s urgent," I said, not giving him a chance to refuse.

When Mark arrived, he wore a worried smile. "What’s going on, Dan? You look like you’ve seen a ghost." I didn’t answer. I led him to the study, where the laptop still sat open, Emily’s face frozen on the screen.

His smile faltered. "What is this?" I said, "This is a video Emily recorded two days before she died. She knew about you and Victoria. She knew you were planning to take Noah’s trust."

Mark laughed nervously. "That’s insane. You’re grieving, Dan. You’re not thinking clearly." I slammed my hand on the desk. "Don’t you dare use my grief against me. I saw the petition. I saw your signature."

He stepped back, his face paling. "I can explain. Victoria said you were unstable. She said you were a danger to Noah. I was just trying to protect him."

"You were trying to protect him from me?" I shouted. "You were helping her steal everything I have left."

Mark’s eyes darted around the room. "You don’t understand. Victoria has something on me. She’s been blackmailing me for months." I stared at him. "What could she possibly have on you?" He hesitated, then whispered, "I made a mistake. Years ago, before Emily died, I had an affair with Victoria. She was working for me then."

I felt the air leave my lungs. "You brought her into our lives. You knew what she was, and you let her near my son." Mark’s voice cracked. "I didn’t know she would go this far. She said she just wanted a better life. She promised she would never hurt Noah."

"She hurt him," I said coldly. "She left bruises on his wrist. And you signed a document that could have taken him away from me."

Mark sank into a chair, his head in his hands. "I’m sorry. I never meant for any of this to happen." I wanted to believe him, but I couldn’t. "Sorry doesn’t undo what you did."

The Darker Truth

That night, I couldn’t sleep. I kept thinking about Emily’s video and the way she had warned me. But there was something else—a detail I had missed. I replayed the recording. "They are planning to make her Noah’s legal guardian." Why would they need a guardian if I was still alive?

I called my lawyer, who confirmed my worst fear. The petition Mark signed included a request for a temporary emergency custody hearing—scheduled for the next morning. If I didn’t show up, Noah could be placed in Victoria’s care temporarily.

I spent the night preparing. I gathered every piece of evidence: the video, the bank records, Grace’s testimony, and the security footage of Victoria assaulting Noah. By dawn, I was ready.

At the hearing, Victoria’s lawyer argued that I was a danger to my own son. "Mr. Mercer has a history of emotional instability," he claimed. "He’s unfit to raise a child." I watched as Victoria sat in the front row, her face a mask of innocence.

When it was my turn, I presented the evidence. The judge’s expression hardened as she watched the video. When she saw the bruises on Noah’s wrist, she adjourned the court and ordered an immediate investigation.

After the hearing, I found Mark waiting outside. "Dan, please. I’ll do anything to make this right." I looked at him, feeling nothing but disappointment. "You can start by telling the truth. To the police, to the court, and to me."

He nodded, tears in his eyes. "I will. I’ll testify against her. I’ll give back everything." I wanted to forgive him, but I couldn’t. Not yet. Maybe not ever.

As I drove home, I called Grace. "I need you to tell me everything you know. Has anyone else been involved?" There was a long pause. Then Grace’s voice, low and serious: "There’s one more thing. The night Emily died, Victoria visited her in the hospital. I saw her leave the room just after visiting hours ended."
