Previously: When Rachel arrived to pick up her children, the daycare worker insisted her daughter had already gone home. But her young son's desperate tears by a locked gate revealed a terrifying truth.

The Web of Lies

Rachel felt the room spin. "What do you mean she went home?" she gasped. "My ex-husband doesn't have custody! You have his photo on the red-alert list at the front desk!"

Sarah's face drained of what little color it had left. She clutched her clipboard like a shield. "There was a mistake, Rachel. A man matching his description came by, showed an ID, and Lily ran to him. We thought... we thought it was authorized. By the time we realized, they were gone."

Rachel felt her knees go weak, but Leo's frantic voice cut through the fog of her panic.

"She's lying, Mommy!" Leo cried out, his face pressed against the cold metal bars. "Lily didn't leave with anyone! We were playing hide-and-seek. Lily hid in the big supply closet down there. Then Miss Sarah walked in, locked the big door, and turned off the lights! I told her Lily was inside, but she told me to shut up or we'd get kicked out!"

The accusation hung in the air, heavy and damning. Rachel slowly turned her gaze back to Sarah. The daycare worker’s eyes were wide with terror, her breathing shallow and rapid. She stepped back, her hands shaking violently.

"He's a child, Rachel! He's making up stories!" Sarah stammered, her voice rising in pitch. "You can't believe him!"

Rachel immediately grabbed her phone to dial 911, but Sarah lunged forward, desperately trying to snatch the device from her hands.

"Don't call them!" Sarah begged, her polite facade completely shattered. "If the state finds out we left a child unattended in the restricted wing, they'll shut us down instantly! I'll lose my license! Please, let me find the keys. We can handle this privately!"

Before Rachel could push the frantic worker away, the heavy front doors of the daycare burst open. Rachel’s ex-husband, Mark, ran into the hallway. He looked disheveled and out of breath. Seeing Rachel and the crying Leo, Mark gasped.

"Rachel! Thank God you're here," Mark panted, holding up his phone. "I just got a frantic, anonymous text saying Lily was in danger here. What is going on?"
