The drive home was suffocating. Nobody spoke a word. Once inside the safety of their suburban home, Daniel sent Ava to her room to rest. He then sat Jack down on the living room sofa, while Ashley hovered nervously near the front door, her keys jingling in her trembling hand. She looked like she wanted to run, but Daniel’s stern gaze held her in place.

"Jack," Daniel said, kneeling so he was eye-level with his son. "You need to tell me exactly what you saw. No games, buddy. This is very serious."

Jack wiped a tear from his cheek with the sleeve of his hoodie. "I saw her, Dad. Last week, when you were working late. I went to Ava’s room to show her my drawing. But the door was almost closed. Through the crack, I saw Ava. She wasn't in her chair. She was standing by her window, Dad! She was actually walking!"

Daniel felt the air leave his lungs. He looked up at Ashley, whose jaw was clenched so tight her skin looked translucent. "Ava was walking?" Daniel whispered, his heart hammering.

"Yes!" Jack sobbed. "But then Ashley walked in. She grabbed Ava by her shoulders and pushed her back onto the bed. She told Ava that if she ever walked in front of you, you would leave us. She said you only stay with us because Ava is sick, and if she gets better, we won't need a therapist anymore and you'll find a new family."

The cruelty of the manipulation was staggering, but Jack wasn't finished. He reached deep into his hoodie pocket and pulled out a small, dark glass bottle. "And she puts these drops in Ava's juice every single night. I saw her hide it in her medical bag."

Daniel snatched the bottle. His eyes scanned the prescription label. It was a powerful, clinical-grade muscle relaxant. In high, daily doses, it would cause severe muscle weakness and temporary paralysis, mimicking a permanent spinal injury. Ashley was poisoning his daughter to keep her dependent.
