The modern medical center corridor was bathed in sterile, bright natural light that reflected off the highly polished marble floors. James, wearing a comfortable but worn brown cardigan, pushed his nine-year-old daughter Sophie’s wheelchair with slow, deliberate care. Next to him walked Emily, his fiancée of two months, dressed in an elegant beige blazer and a colorful floral skirt. She looked every bit the picture of a supportive, loving future stepmother. Trailing a few paces behind them was eight-year-old Tommy, his bright red sweater a stark contrast to the sterile white walls.

Tommy had been quiet all morning, his brow furrowed in a way that made him look far older than his eight years. Suddenly, he stopped walking. The squeak of his sneakers on the marble floor caught James's attention.

"She's not really paralyzed,"

Tommy said, his voice ringing with a chilling clarity that echoed down the long hallway.

James froze, his hands gripping the handles of the wheelchair. He looked down at Sophie, whose head immediately dropped, her shoulders beginning to tremble.

"Tommy, what are you talking about?"

James asked, a nervous chuckle escaping his throat.

"That isn't funny. Your sister had a terrible accident."

But Tommy’s gaze was locked onto Emily, his arm raised and finger pointing accusingly at her.

the young boy asserted, his voice shaking with a mixture of fear and absolute conviction.

James’s heart plummeted. He slowly turned his head to look at the woman he loved. Emily’s face drained of all color. She let out a sharp, horrified gasp, her hands flying to her mouth as she instinctively backed away, her eyes darting around like a trapped animal.
