Previously: While walking home from a memorial service, Clara’s eight-year-old son spots a homeless boy who looks exactly like him. A golden pocket watch reveals a devastating truth Clara’s wealthy in-laws hid for years.

Inside the warm booth of a nearby diner, Clara wrapped her coat around the shivering boy, whose name was Max. As the two boys sat side-by-side, the resemblance was undeniable. They were identical twins. Clara’s heart broke as she watched Max ravenously eat a warm meal, his small, scraped hands trembling.

The Secret in the Gold

Clara held the gold pocket watch, her thumb tracing the familiar engraving.

"Where did you get this, Max?" she asked, her voice barely a whisper.

Max swallowed hard, his eyes wide and earnest.

"A man named Marcus gave it to me at the shelter before he got really sick," Max explained. "He said he used to work for a very rich family named the Vance clan. He told me they paid a doctor to tell my mom I died when I was born. Marcus was supposed to take me far away, but he couldn't bear to hurt me. He raised me as best as he could until he died last month."

The revelation hit Clara like a physical blow. The Vance family. Her late husband’s wealthy, aristocratic family, led by the ruthless matriarch, Eleanor Vance. Eleanor had hated Clara from the moment they met, viewing her as a middle-class opportunist. When Daniel died, Eleanor had tried to seize total control. To think she had bribed hospital staff to steal one of Clara’s newborn twins was a level of depravity Clara could barely comprehend.

Clara brought Max to her apartment, locking the door securely behind them. But the illusion of safety was shattered minutes later when her phone rang. The caller ID was private. Trembling, Clara answered.

"I see you’ve brought home some street garbage, Clara," Eleanor’s cold, aristocratic voice purred through the receiver. "I strongly advise you to put it back. If you try to expose this, I will ensure you lose Leo, too. I have the best lawyers in the state, and you have nothing."
