Previously: After my young son found my photograph hidden inside our unconscious nanny's golden locket, a dark family secret unravels, forcing me to confront a past I thought was buried forever.

Whispers from the Past

Helena’s eyelids fluttered open, groaning as the haze of her fainting spell began to lift. The moment her eyes focused on the locket in Leo's hand, sheer terror washed over her. She scrambled backward against the mahogany wainscoting, her hand instinctively flying to her bare neck. I ushered a confused and crying Leo out of the room, instructing the housekeeper to take him upstairs. Once we were alone in my study, the heavy silence of the room felt suffocating.

I placed the gold locket on my desk, the brass desk lamp casting a harsh glare over the worn photograph. "Explain this, Helena," I demanded, my voice dangerously calm. "This photo belonged to Eleanor. How do you have it? Who are you?"

Helena stood trembling, her hands clasped tightly. Tears streamed down her pale cheeks as she realized there was no escape. "Eleanor was my half-sister," she confessed, her voice barely a whisper. "Our father kept us apart, but Eleanor found me years ago. When she fell ill, she reached out. She was terrified for Leo's future, and she made me promise to watch over him if she didn't make it."

My mind reeled. Eleanor had never mentioned a sister. But the resemblance, now that I looked closely, was undeniable. Yet, the pieces didn't fit.

"If you are her sister, why didn't you just come to me? Why the fake references? Why lie to get this job?"

Helena looked up, a sudden fierceness replacing her fear.

"Because Eleanor told me not to trust you. She said you were the reason she was dying, Richard. She told me to find the red diary locked in your safe. It holds the truth about what you did to her."

My breath caught in my throat. I did have a locked red diary in my safe—one that Eleanor had left behind, a diary I had never been able to open because the key was missing.
