Previously: When Nick handed his elderly mother a heavy sack of rice in the pouring rain, she thought he was pushing her away. But the secret note hidden inside revealed a terrifying truth.

The Secret in the Note

The note was written in Nick’s hurried, frantic handwriting. "Mom, if you are reading this, you are safe. Vanessa has taken control of everything. She has been tracking my phone, listening to my calls, and she threatened to put you in a state asylum if I didn't sign over your house to her. I had to make her believe I hated you. I had to push you away so she wouldn't be suspicious. This money is everything I have left. Take it and leave the city tonight. Do not look back. I love you."

Nancy’s heart shattered. Her son wasn't abandoning her; he was sacrificing his own life and freedom to protect her from his ruthless, greedy wife, Vanessa. For months, Vanessa had isolated Nick, slowly stripping away his independence. Now, she was holding his future hostage. But Nancy was not a woman who ran away when her child was in danger.

Instead of packing her bags, Nancy put the cash in a safe place and walked out into the storm. She drove to Nick’s house, parking a block away. Creeping up to the window of the living room, she peered through the glass. What she saw made her blood run cold. Vanessa was shouting at Nick, throwing a glass vase that shattered against the wall near his head. "You gave her the rice, right?" Vanessa sneered, her face twisted in malice. "If I ever see that old woman near this house again, I will release those forged papers to the police, and you'll spend the next ten years in prison."

Nick stood there, defeated, his head bowed. Nancy realized with horror that Vanessa had framed Nick for a financial crime he didn't commit, using forged documents to keep him under her absolute control. Nancy knew she had to act fast, but she needed proof to destroy Vanessa's leverage.
