Previously: At a high-society gala, seven-year-old Toby publicly rejects his wealthy mother, Victoria, clinging to his nanny, Clara. As a devastating secret unravels, Victoria must face a heartbreaking truth.

The Secret in the Study

The humiliation of the gala forced Victoria to retreat to the private quarters of the mansion, dragging a weeping Toby and a pale, trembling Clara with her. Her husband, Richard, followed closely behind, his face a mask of tight-lipped anxiety. Once the heavy oak doors of the study closed, sealing out the whispers of the high-society guests, Victoria demanded answers. "What is the meaning of this, Clara? What have you been telling my son?" she demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of anger and deep betrayal.

Clara fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face.

"I swear, Victoria, I never told him anything! I would never hurt you like this!"
she sobbed. But Toby stood protectively in front of Clara, his small chest heaving. He reached into his pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, thrusting it toward Victoria.
"I found this in Daddy’s desk,"
Toby whispered, his anger melting into pure confusion.
"It says Clara gave birth to me. It says she is my mother."

Victoria’s heart stopped. She snatched the paper from Toby’s hand. It was a medical record from the clinic where Toby had been born seven years ago. As her eyes scanned the document, the truth hit her like a physical blow. The birth mother listed was indeed Clara Vance. Victoria turned her gaze slowly toward her husband, Richard, whose face had gone completely white. "Richard, what is this?" she whispered, her voice cracking. "We adopted Toby through an agency. You told me his birth parents were anonymous."

Richard sank into an armchair, burying his face in his hands. The truth was finally unraveling. He admitted that seven years ago, desperate to give Victoria the baby she desperately wanted after years of failed fertility treatments, he had secretly arranged a private surrogacy with Clara. To protect Victoria’s pride and avoid legal complications, he lied, telling her the baby came from a distant, closed adoption agency. He had later hired Clara as a nanny so she could be near her biological son, never expecting Toby to find the hidden papers.
