My Son Screamed His Sister Was Trapped Inside, but the Daycare Worker Lied
Previously: When Heather arrived at the daycare, her son Logan was crying hysterically by a safety gate, clutching his sister's ribbon. The worker claimed she went home—but the truth was far more sinister.
The Locked Door
Heather’s maternal instincts screamed that something was terribly wrong. There was absolutely no one else authorized to pick up Lily. Her husband, Mark, was hours away on a business trip, and her parents were out of state. She pulled out her phone, her hands shaking so violently she could barely dial Mark's number. When he answered, his confused voice confirmed her worst fears—he had not authorized anyone, nor had he picked Lily up.
"Chloe, who took my daughter?" Heather demanded, stepping directly into the worker’s personal space. "Show me the sign-out sheet right now!"
Chloe swallowed hard, her face draining of color. "It... it was an older woman," she stammered, backing away toward the office. "She had the family pin code. I assumed it was her grandmother. They left ten minutes ago."
But Logan was shaking his head violently, tugging at his mother’s coat. "No, Mommy! Grandma didn't take her! The bad lady put Lily in the dark basement! She locked the door!" He pointed a trembling finger toward the heavy, windowless wooden door at the very end of the hall—the entrance to the old basement storage unit.
Heather’s blood ran cold. The "bad lady" Logan was referring to couldn't be a stranger. She looked at Chloe, whose eyes were now wide with sheer panic. Chloe moved quickly, placing her body directly in front of the basement door corridor.
"You can't go down there," Chloe whispered, her voice cracking. "It's restricted. It's just a storage area. Your son is confused. I'm calling security if you don't leave."
Realizing she was getting no help, Heather bypassed Chloe entirely. She rushed toward the basement door and grabbed the brass handle. It was locked tight. She pressed her ear against the wood. From the deep, silent dark below, she heard a faint, muffled thumping, followed by a tiny, trembling sob.
"Mommy?" a small voice whimpered from behind the heavy wood.
