The Screams in the Corridor

The cheerful, brightly colored walls of Sunshine Academy, adorned with painted cartoon lions and smiling giraffes, felt suddenly suffocating as Megan rushed through the entrance. It was four o'clock, the usual pick-up time, but the peaceful afternoon routine was shattered by a high-pitched, desperate wail echoing down the hallway. Megan’s heart hammered against her ribs as she recognized the voice instantly. It was her four-year-old son, Toby.

Breaking into a frantic run, her heels clicking loudly against the polished linoleum, Megan rounded the corner and gasped. Toby was on his knees in his favorite green striped t-shirt, clutching a beige safety gate that blocked the hallway leading to the back classrooms. His tiny knuckles were white as he held onto a bright red ribbon tied tightly to the metal latch. He was shaking violently, his face flushed and wet with tears as he screamed toward the dark corridor beyond,

My sister is inside! She's inside!

Standing just a few feet away was Clara, one of the childcare assistants. Dressed in her bright yellow school polo shirt, Clara looked incredibly uneasy, her eyes darting nervously toward the other parents who were beginning to gather and whisper. When she saw Megan approach, Clara forced a tight, defensive smile and waved her hand dismissively.

He's just making a scene, Megan,
Clara said, her voice tight with a forced, trembling sweetness.
He's been like this for ten minutes.

Megan ignored her, dropping to her knees and pulling Toby into her arms. The boy was hysterical, his chest heaving as he pointed a trembling finger through the bars of the gate.

She can't open it!
he wailed, burying his face in Megan's shoulder.
She can't open the door!

Panic, cold and sharp, pierced Megan’s chest. She looked up at Clara, her voice trembling.

Where is my daughter, Clara? Where is Lily?

Clara swallowed hard, her hand nervously clutching her collar.

She went home, Megan,
she replied, her voice barely a whisper.
She's already gone.

But Toby let out another ear-piercing shriek, pulling frantically on the red ribbon.

No, she didn't! She didn't go home!
