Previously: When Leo returned home for his father's sudden funeral, his stepmother Maria refused to let him open the casket. But a strange scratching noise from inside revealed a horrifying truth.

With a desperate cry, Leo shoved Maria aside. She stumbled against the floral arrangements, sending a vase of lilies crashing to the hardwood floor. Ignoring her screams, Leo jammed the heavy brass candle holder under the edge of the oak lid and pried with all his strength. With a loud, splintering crack, the seal broke.

The Horrifying Truth

Leo threw the heavy lid back, and the horrific scene inside stole the breath from his lungs. His father, Arthur, lay bound in his own funeral suit, his eyes bloodshot and tears streaming down his face. A thick band of duct tape sealed his mouth shut. Arthur was alive, panting heavily in the sudden rush of fresh air.

"Dad!"
Leo cried, dropping to his knees. He frantically tore the gag from his father's face and sliced through the zip-ties on his wrists with a pocketknife.

Arthur gasped, coughing violently as he clutched his son's shoulders.

"Leo... thank God,"
he wheezed, his voice raw.
"She poisoned my tea... I was paralyzed, but I could hear everything. She was going to cremate me alive to inherit the estate!"

Leo spun around, his eyes blazing with fury, to find Maria backing toward the front door. But she didn't get far. Hearing the violent crash of the vase and the shouting, a neighbor who had been waiting outside had already called the police. Two officers burst through the front door, tackling Maria to the ground just as she reached the porch.

As the sirens wailed in the distance, Arthur held his son tight, his hands still shaking from the near-death ordeal. He had almost lost his life to the greed of a woman he trusted, but he had been saved by the relentless love of his son. True family bonds can never be buried, and greed will always stumble when confronted by the fierce light of truth.
