The heavy leather suitcase slipped from Charles's hand, clattering loudly against the marble floor. The sudden noise shattered the tense silence of the foyer. Victoria’s mocking laughter instantly withered, her face turning pale before she quickly tried to mask her cruelty with a sweet, innocent smile. She took a step back, smoothing down her pink dress.

"Charles! Darling, you're home early," Victoria stammered, her voice suddenly high-pitched and airy. "It's nothing, really. Your mother had a little accident, and she was just helping me tidy up. You know how she insists on being useful."

But Charles wasn't listening to his wife. He rushed forward, dropping to his knees beside Frances. He gently took the dirty rag from her trembling, red hands and helped her to her feet. Frances could barely look her son in the eye, her shoulders shaking with deep, silent sobs. Charles wrapped a protective arm around her, his heart breaking at her fragile state.

He turned his gaze to Owen, who was trying to shrink into the shadows of the hallway. "Owen, tell me the truth," Charles demanded, his voice dangerously low. "What has been going on in my house while I was away?"

Owen looked at his sister, who was glaring at him with a silent, threatening intensity. But the guilt was too much for the young man to bear. He looked at Frances's tear-stained face and cracked. He confessed that Victoria had dismissed the entire cleaning staff the moment Charles left, forcing his elderly mother to perform backbreaking chores under the threat of being thrown out onto the streets.

Victoria gasped, her mask slipping entirely. "How dare you believe this lie, Charles!" she shrieked, her elegant facade crumbling into ugly rage. "She is a burden! If you take her side over mine, my family will pull all their investments from your firm. You'll be ruined!"
