Previously: When Walter walked into his mother's mansion and saw his wife, Irene, brutally attacking her, he reacted in pure survival mode. But the truth behind the violence was far worse.

The Poison in the Family Well

Irene lay on the cold marble, wiping a smear of crimson from her lip. Instead of crying or begging for mercy, she began to laugh—a cold, chilling sound that echoed off the high ceilings of the foyer. Walter ignored her, kneeling quickly beside his mother. Lillian was shaking violently, her breathing shallow as she clung to his charcoal grey suit jacket. He gently helped her sit up, his heart breaking at the sight of the dark bruise already forming on her delicate temple.

"Are you okay, Mom? Oh my God, I'm so sorry I wasn't here sooner," Walter whispered, his voice cracking with emotion.

Lillian could only nod weakly, her eyes darting in terror toward Irene, who was now slowly pushing herself up into a sitting position. Irene spat a mouthful of blood onto the pristine grey marble, her eyes locked onto Walter with a mixture of contempt and twisted amusement.

"You think you're a hero, Walter?" Irene sneered, adjusting her torn violet dress. "You're just a blind fool protecting a monster. Ask your precious mother what she keeps in the safe behind the library portrait. Ask her how your father really died."

Walter stiffened. His father, Arthur, had passed away five years ago from what the doctors ruled a sudden heart attack. It was a tragedy that had devastated Walter, leaving Lillian as the sole heir to the massive Sterling estate. Walter turned his gaze slowly toward his mother. To his horror, Lillian’s face drained of what little color it had left. She refused to meet his eyes, her gaze dropping to the scattered daisies on the floor.

"Don't listen to her, Walter," Lillian pleaded, her voice barely a whisper. "She's insane. She's trying to tear us apart."

Irene stood up, leaning against the walnut banister. "She poisoned him, Walter. I found the medical records and the diary she tried to burn. I have the proof. She killed Arthur to keep him from changing his will to leave everything to you. She wanted the power, and she was going to let you inherit nothing!"
