A Secret in the Rain

The cold autumn rain fell in relentless sheets over the small town of Oakridge, casting everything in a bleak, desaturated gray. Outside the tall, black iron gate of a suburban home, thirty-five-year-old David stood shivering in his dark hooded jacket. His hands gripped a rough, heavy burlap sack. Just on the other side of the gate stood his seventy-one-year-old mother, Mrs. Rose. Her short gray hair was soaked, and her eyes were red from crying. She had walked all this way in the freezing storm, desperate for help.

David looked back toward the house, terrified that his wife, Evelyn, would see them through the windows. Evelyn had forbidden him from helping his mother, controlling every cent of their finances with an iron fist. Feeling the crushing weight of guilt, David pushed the heavy sack through the iron bars.

"Take the rice and go, mom,"

he whispered, his voice trembling with emotion.

Mrs. Rose clutched the heavy sack to her chest, her body shaking with deep, ragged sobs. Even in her despair, she tried to defend her son to herself.

"He's just struggling,"

she muttered, her voice breaking as she turned and began the slow, painful walk back to her rustic wooden cottage on the edge of town.

Once inside her warm, modest living room, Mrs. Rose pushed the heavy wooden door shut. She placed the damp burlap sack onto her wooden kitchen table and untied the coarse string. Reaching her wrinkled, trembling hands inside, her fingers bypassed the grains of rice and pulled out a thick, white envelope. On the front, written in David's familiar handwriting, was her name. Inside was three thousand dollars in cash—and a small note. "I'm sorry mom, I couldn't say it in front of her," David's voice seemed to whisper in her mind. Mrs. Rose collapsed into her chair, clutching the money as tears of relief poured down her face.
