My Wife Forced My Daughter to Be Our Maid, But My Father’s Bracelet Exposed Her
The Homecoming
The heavy oak doors of the Sterling manor always opened with a quiet, solemn groan, but today, the silence that greeted David was suffocating. Having cut his London antique acquisition trip short by three days, he carried a vintage, golden-furred teddy bear under his arm, eager to surprise his eight-year-old daughter, Lily. He expected the warm aroma of cinnamon tea and the sound of laughter. Instead, as he stepped into the grand classical foyer, a raw, desperate sob echoed off the marble walls.
David froze. In the center of the cavernous room, kneeling on the cold stone, was Lily. She wasn't wearing her usual bright clothes. Instead, she was engulfed in dusty, oversized grey overalls, her tiny hands clutching a heavy wooden mop. Tears streamed down her face, cutting clean paths through the grime on her cheeks.
"Dad, where are you?"she wept to the empty air, unaware he had just entered.
Before David could drop his bags, the sharp click of high heels sounded from the landing. Victoria, his elegant blonde wife of two years, descended the staircase. She held a half-empty glass of red wine, her silk gown billowing behind her. She stopped dead when she saw David, her perfect composure slipping for a fraction of a second.
"Why are you home early, darling?"she asked, her voice quickly smoothing into an airy, dismissive tone.
David’s gaze darted from his immaculate wife to his weeping child. Rage, hot and sudden, flared in his chest.
"Why is she on the floor?"he demanded, his voice echoing in the foyer.
Victoria took a slow sip of her wine.
"She was just playing, David. You know how children are."
But Lily looked up, her eyes wide with terror as she pulled a heavy, intricately carved silver bracelet from her pocket.
"Grandpa gave it to me,"she cried, holding it up like a shield.
"Where did you get that?"David whispered, recognizing his father’s hallmark. Victoria lunged forward, her voice rising.
"She doesn't know what she's saying!"But Lily held tight, sobbing,
"He said only you should read it... He said I'm the real heir to this house."
”He said I'm the real heir to this house."
