Previously: When a tattered stranger touched paralyzed Margaret's feet on a sunlit street, a warm light restored her walk—and unlocked a deeply buried family secret she was forced to forget.

The Echoes of a Forgotten Past

The miracle on the cobblestone street spread through the estate like wildfire. To the absolute astonishment of her doctors, Margaret walked into her family’s grand manor on her own two feet. Yet, the physical miracle was quickly overshadowed by the storm brewing in her mind. The stranger’s parting words, "Soon you will remember me," echoed relentlessly in her thoughts. Every time she closed her eyes, she saw his piercing blue gaze, and a name hovered on the tip of her tongue—a name she had been forbidden to speak.

Determined to find answers, Margaret bypassed her celebrating household and marched directly to the attic. She began frantically searching through old trunks of her childhood belongings, items her stepfather, Arthur, had locked away after her mother’s passing. Deep inside a dusty velvet box, her fingers brushed against a tarnished silver locket. She popped it open. Inside was a portrait of a young boy with those same striking blue eyes, standing beside a younger Margaret. Etched on the back was a simple inscription: "Gabriel & Margaret, Together Always."

In an instant, the floodgates of her memory burst open. Gabriel wasn’t a stranger. He was her childhood sweetheart, the son of the estate's former gardener. They had been inseparable until the day of the tragic carriage accident five years ago. Now, the dark truth crystallized in her mind. The accident hadn't been an accident at all. Her stepfather, Arthur, had sabotaged the carriage to eliminate Margaret and seize her mother's vast inheritance. Gabriel had tried to save her, but Arthur had framed the poor boy for the crash, banishing him from the estate under threat of death, while forcing a traumatized, injured Margaret to believe Gabriel had abandoned her.

Just as the horrifying truth settled in, the heavy attic door creaked open. There stood Arthur, his face pale and eyes narrowed in fury as he saw Margaret standing upright, holding the locket.

"You shouldn't be walking, Margaret," Arthur sneered, stepping into the room. "And you certainly shouldn't be digging into things best left forgotten."
