The Voice of an Angel

The autumn wind swept through the tall, ancient oaks of Oakridge Cemetery, carrying with it the bitter chill of November. Elena knelt on the damp earth, her fingers trembling as she brushed away the fallen leaves from a small, weathered headstone. Beside her, Michael stood like a statue, his grey wool coat wrapped tightly around him, his eyes hollowed by three years of relentless grief. On the stone sat a framed photograph of two baby boys—Leo and Toby—whose lives had allegedly ended before they could even take their first steps.

They had been told there was a fatal respiratory complication at birth. They had been handed empty promises and closed caskets. For three long years, this cold plot of land was the only place where Elena felt any connection to her children. "I miss them so much, Michael," she whispered, her voice cracking under the weight of her sorrow.

Before Michael could offer his usual, empty comforts, a soft rustle of leaves made them both turn. Standing just feet away was a young girl. She couldn't have been older than six, her blonde hair tangled and her white dress stained with dirt. She looked like a lost soul, yet her eyes held a startling, ancient clarity.

She pointed a small, dirty finger at the framed photograph on the headstone.

"They're not gone,"
she said, her voice steady and clear against the whistling wind.

Michael gasped, taking a step back as if struck.

"What did you say?"
he asked, his voice shaking with a mixture of anger and sudden, desperate hope.

The girl didn't flinch. She looked directly at Michael.

"They stay with me,"
she replied.

Elena rose to her knees, her heart hammering against her ribs so violently it felt painful. Tears blurred her vision as she stared at the child.

"Who?"
she gasped, barely able to form the word.

Lily pointed to the photograph again, her expression solemn.

"Both of them."

Michael lunged forward, kneeling beside the girl, his hands hovering over her shoulders but not daring to touch her.

"Where? Where are they, sweetheart?"

Lily began to turn away, her gaze drifting toward the rusted iron gates of the cemetery.

"At the orphanage,"
she whispered. Elena looked at Michael, her tearful face suddenly illuminated by a wild, terrifying hope. Michael grabbed Lily's hand, his voice thick with emotion.
"Take us there. Please, take us there."

"Take us there. Please, take us there."
