Previously: When a homeless boy stopped Jessica on a dark street, pointing at her rare gold pin, she had no idea it would lead her to the sister she lost fifteen years ago.

A Ghost from the Past

The street seemed to fade into a blur as Jessica stared at the gold leaf pin in the boy's hand. Memories rushed back like a tidal wave. Fifteen years ago, her younger sister, Clara, had walked out of their family home after a devastating argument with their parents. Clara had taken nothing with her except her clothes and the identical gold pin their grandmother had gifted them both on their fourteenth birthdays. For over a decade, the family had searched, but Clara had vanished without a trace.

Jessica knelt on the cold concrete, ignoring the dirt, and gently took the boy's small, shivering shoulders in her hands.

"What is your name, sweetheart?" Jessica asked, her voice shaking.
"Sam," the boy sniffled, wiping his nose with his sleeve. "My mom is really sick. We live in the shelter down the street. She gave me this pin and told me to try and sell it to a jeweler so we could buy her medicine. But... but then I saw you walking, and I saw your coat."

Jessica felt a lump form in her throat. The pieces of the puzzle were falling into place, painting a picture that was both tragic and hopeful.

"Sam, where is your mother right now? Can you take me to her?" Jessica pleaded, her heart hammering against her ribs.

Sam nodded eagerly, hope flickering in his tear-stained eyes. He turned and began to run down the dimly lit alleyway, his worn-out sneakers squeaking against the wet ground. Jessica didn't hesitate. She threw caution to the wind, clutching her trench coat tightly as she chased after the boy through the shadows of the city, praying that her heart wasn't playing a cruel trick on her.
