The Nanny-Cam Caught My Stepmother's Deadly Secret at the Mansion — Part 2

Previously: Elena saved baby Theo from a rolling carriage, but Selena blamed her. Then Martha revealed the nanny-cam footage that exposed the stepmother's deadly plot.

Selena's words hung in the air like poison, and Marcus looked like he'd seen a ghost.

The guards had already dragged Selena through the archway, but her final words echoed off the limestone like a curse. Elena stood frozen, Theo still clutched against her chest, his tiny fingers wrapped around her damp scrub top. The morning sun felt suddenly cold.

Marcus stared at the spot where Selena had vanished, his face ashen. "Martha," he said, his voice hoarse, "take Theo inside. And have the guards bring Selena to my study — I need to speak with her privately."

Martha nodded, gently lifting the baby from Elena's arms. "Come, little one," she murmured, her voice soft as she carried him toward the mansion. But before she disappeared through the doorway, she shot Elena a look that said more than words ever could: Be careful.

Elena stood alone on the terrace, her knee throbbing where the carriage wheel had struck her. The scrape was bleeding through her torn trousers, but she barely felt it. Her mind was racing — Selena's words replayed on an endless loop: Things about Theo's real mother.

Marcus finally turned to her, his dark eyes unreadable. "Elena, I owe you an apology. And I owe you an explanation."

"You don't owe me anything," she said, though her voice trembled. "I just want to know what Selena meant."

Marcus let out a long breath, running a hand through his hair. "My first wife, Amelia — Theo's biological mother — she died three years ago. A car accident, they said. But Selena was the only witness, and she told the police a story that never quite added up."

Elena felt a chill run down her spine. "What do you mean?"

"Amelia was terrified of Selena," Marcus admitted, his voice low. "She told me once that Selena had threatened her — said she'd never let another woman raise my children. I dismissed it as paranoia. But now…" He trailed off, shaking his head.

"Now you think Selena had something to do with her death?" Elena asked, the words barely a whisper.

Before Marcus could answer, Martha reappeared in the doorway, her face pale. "Mr. Thorne, the guards found something in Selena's private quarters. You need to see this."

They followed her through the mansion's grand halls, past gilded mirrors and crystal chandeliers, until they reached a small sitting room that had been converted into Selena's private office. The guards stood by the door, holding a stack of papers and a small velvet box.

"This was hidden behind a loose panel in her desk," Martha said, her voice tight with barely contained anger. "Letters. And a photograph."

Marcus took the photograph first. His hands shook as he examined it — a picture of a younger Selena, standing next to a man Elena didn't recognize. The man had his arm around Selena's shoulders, and they were both smiling like they shared a secret.

"Who is that?" Elena asked.

Marcus's voice was barely audible. "That's my brother, Daniel. He died in a boating accident five years ago."

Martha picked up one of the letters, her eyes scanning the elegant script. "Mr. Thorne, these are love letters. Between Selena and Daniel. They were planning to run away together — but Daniel died before he could inherit his share of the estate."

Marcus's face contorted with a mixture of shock and rage. "So she married me to get the money. And when Daniel died, she…"

"She stayed," Martha finished. "And when Amelia had Theo, she saw her as a threat."

Elena's stomach churned. She thought of the carriage rolling down the ramp, the brake chain neatly removed. Selena hadn't just wanted to hurt her — she'd wanted to hurt Marcus, to destroy the last piece of Amelia he had left.

"There's more," Martha said, holding up a final document. "This is a letter from Daniel, dated two days before his accident. He wrote that Selena was pressuring him to 'take care of' Amelia. He said he refused — and that she threatened to do it herself."

Marcus sank into a chair, his head in his hands. "She killed him. She killed Daniel, and she killed Amelia, and she tried to kill Theo."

Elena knelt beside him, placing a hand on his shoulder. "But she didn't succeed," she said softly. "Theo is alive. And now she'll face justice."

Marcus looked up, his eyes red-rimmed. "Elena, I need to ask you something. And I need you to be honest with me."

"Anything."

"You've been with Theo since he was born. You've loved him like your own. And now I know — without you, he'd be dead." He paused, his voice cracking. "Would you consider becoming his full-time guardian? Not just his nanny. His mother."

Elena's heart stopped. "Marcus, I…"

"I know it's sudden," he said quickly. "But I can't trust anyone else. And I see the way you look at him. You love him."

Before she could answer, the door burst open and a guard rushed in. "Mr. Thorne, sir — Selena escaped. She overpowered the guard in the west wing and she's gone."

Elena's blood ran cold. She thought of the mansion's sprawling grounds, the hidden paths that led down to the cliffs, the boathouse where the family kept their speedboats.

"She's heading for the harbor," Marcus said, his voice hard as stone. "She's going to run."

Elena grabbed his arm. "Then let's make sure she doesn't get far."
