Desperate to escape the whispering crowd, Victoria ushered Toby and Clara into a private bridal suite upstairs. The heavy oak door shut out the murmurs of the wedding guests, but the tension inside the room was suffocating. Toby sat on a velvet sofa, still weeping, while Clara stood trembling near the window.

"Toby, look at me," Victoria commanded gently, kneeling in front of her son. "Why would you say something so hurtful? I carried you, I raised you."

Toby reached into his small suit pocket and pulled out a crumpled piece of paper, throwing it onto the table. "Because it's true! I found this in Clara's room!" he sobbed.

Victoria picked up the paper, her hands shaking. As her eyes scanned the legal document, her breath caught. It was a gestational surrogacy agreement from seven years ago. At the bottom of the page was the signature of her late husband, Julian, and the signature of the surrogate: Clara Jenkins.

Victoria felt the room spin. Seven years ago, after years of failed fertility treatments, Julian had told her they had found an anonymous surrogate through an agency. Victoria had never met the woman, as Julian insisted on keeping the process strictly confidential to protect their family's privacy. Julian had passed away in a car accident two years ago, leaving Victoria to raise Toby alone.

She turned her gaze to Clara, her eyes burning with a mixture of betrayal and confusion. "You... you were our surrogate?" Victoria whispered. "You hired on as our nanny six months ago under the name Clara Smith. You lied to me."

Clara fell to her knees, tears streaming down her face.

"I never meant to hurt you, Victoria," Clara sobbed. "After Julian died, I saw your job posting. I just wanted to be near him. I never intended to tell him the truth, but Toby found the contract in my locked keepsake box while looking for a spare key."
