Previously: When Arthur’s young niece whispered a chilling warning about his sudden blindness, he dismissed it. But a spilled cup of tea and a hidden bottle soon revealed a dark, life-threatening conspiracy.

The Bitter Taste of Truth

Arthur tried to dismiss Zoe’s words as a child’s overactive imagination, but the seed of suspicion had been planted. He began to look back on the timeline of his illness. His progressive vision loss had begun shortly after Claire convinced him to sign a substantial new life insurance policy. More suspiciously, Claire insisted on brewing his special herbal tea twice a day, never letting anyone else near the kitchen during its preparation.

That evening, Arthur decided to test his terrifying theory. When Claire brought him his usual warm cup of tea, whispering sweet reassurances, he reached out blindly. As his fingers brushed the ceramic, he deliberately knocked the cup to the floor. The ceramic shattered, spilling the dark liquid across the pristine floor.

For a fleeting second, Claire’s loving facade shattered. "Arthur! Look what you did, you clumsy fool!" she hissed, her voice dripping with pure venom before she quickly caught herself and returned to her sweet tone. The raw hatred in her voice confirmed his worst fears.

Determined to find proof, Arthur pretended to sleep the following afternoon but instead crept down the hallway. He overheard Claire whispering on the phone. "He didn’t drink it yesterday. He spilled it," she muttered anxiously. "Just send the next batch. The cumulative effect will make it look like a stroke soon."

Grief and anger warred within Arthur’s chest. He knew he needed physical evidence. Remembering Zoe’s sharp eyes, he managed to ask her where Claire kept the medicine. Zoe whispered that she had seen Claire hiding a small blue dropper bottle inside the hollow leg of the patio table. That night, while Claire was away, Arthur crawled onto the patio, his hands sweeping over the cold metal. His fingers slipped inside the hollow leg and pulled out a small plastic bottle. But just as he did, the back door clicked open. Claire stood there, her eyes locking onto his hand.
