Luke lay on the floor, panting and glaring up at Edward with venomous eyes. He tried to push himself up, but the officer's stern gaze kept him pinned. Amanda slowly crawled backward, her eyes darting between the two men. She knew Edward, but not like this. To her, Edward was a distant figure from her past—her late mother's brother, an uncle she hadn't seen in years. She had no idea he was tracking her husband.

"Edward? What is going on? Why are you here?" Amanda whispered, her voice trembling.

Edward didn't break eye contact with Luke as he answered. "I'm here because your husband is a thief and a traitor, Amanda. He’s been using you as a shield."

Luke spat on the floor, letting out a bitter laugh.

"You don't know anything, old man. You have no warrant, no right to be here."

Edward pulled a badge and a federal warrant from his pocket.

"I have all the authority I need. The military police have been tracking the theft of classified logistics data from the base. And that bandage on your head? That didn't come from a car accident, did it, Luke? It came from the security gate you crashed through last night."

Amanda gasped, looking at Luke in horror. The moving boxes suddenly made terrifying sense. Luke had told her they were moving across the country for a fresh start, forcing her to pack their lives in a frantic rush. Edward stepped over to one of the taped cardboard boxes and sliced it open with a pocket knife. Inside, hidden beneath layers of winter clothes, were several heavy, black military-grade hard drives and folders stamped with classified markings.

Luke’s face drained of color as the evidence lay exposed. He had planned to sell the stolen data and flee, dragging Amanda along as his unwitting accomplice.
