With Thomas safely restrained in handcuffs against the hood of the police cruiser, Officer Carter knelt down to help Beatrice to her feet. The elderly woman was shaking violently, her hands clutching her knitted sweater as if it could shield her from the harsh reality of her son's hatred. Carter guided her to a chair on the porch, offering her a bottle of water from his patrol car while Thomas continued to shout from the driveway.
