Previously: When Deputy Thomas found Clara tied to a birch tree in the freezing woods, he thought it was a harmless family prank. Then she revealed the dark secret her jacket held.

The Secret in the Lining

Sheriff Vance stepped forward with a pocket knife, carefully slicing through the ropes that bound Clara to the birch tree. As the heavy coils fell to the snow, Clara collapsed forward, only to be caught by Thomas's strong arms. "Alright, Clara, the joke is over," Thomas said, his laughter fading into a tone of brotherly concern. "What are you really doing out here in Dad’s old dress uniform? You could have frozen to death."

Clara stood up straight, brushing the snow from her skirt. She looked at the three men who had sworn to protect this county—men her father, the late General Harrison, had trusted implicitly. "I wasn't playing a game, Thomas," she said, her voice trembling but clear. "I came out here because I found Dad's personal ledger hidden in the attic. The one he wrote in before his dishonorable discharge."

The smiles vanished from the officers' faces. The silence that followed was heavy, broken only by the whispering wind. Thomas frowned. "Clara, Dad made a mistake. He took the fall for the missing county funds. It broke him, but it's over."

"No, it's not over," Clara countered, her eyes locking onto Deputy Miller, who suddenly looked very uneasy. "Dad didn't steal anything. He was framed. And the person who did it is standing right here." She reached into the deep inner pocket of the military jacket and pulled out a weathered, leather-bound notebook. "Dad wrote everything down. He knew he was being set up because he discovered a local land-grabbing scheme. And the deputy who forged his signature on the transfer documents was you, Miller."

Thomas spun around to face his colleague, his face pale with shock. Miller took a step back, his hand instinctively resting on his holster as the peaceful snowy clearing suddenly turned into a high-stakes standoff.
