Previously: When a panicked young woman sold an old gold locket for fifty dollars, a jeweler opened it only to discover the face of his long-lost daughter staring back at him.

A Desperate Chase

Adrenaline surged through Walter’s aging veins. Leaping past the counter with a desperation he hadn't felt in ten years, he lunged for the door. He caught the brass handle just as the young woman tried to push it open. Gently but firmly, he pulled her back into the warm light of the shop, locking the door behind them. The girl, whose name was Jessica, sank to her knees, sobbing hysterically into her hands.

Walter knelt beside her, holding the open locket in front of her tear-filled eyes. His hands shook violently as he demanded answers.

"Where did you get this? Tell me the truth! This belonged to my Sarah!"

Jessica shook her head, her voice muffled by her tears.

"I didn't steal it, I swear! Sarah gave it to me!"

The words hit Walter like a physical blow. He gripped her shoulders, his voice a desperate whisper.

"Sarah? She gave it to you? Where is she? Is she alive?"

Jessica looked at him, her eyes wide with a mixture of terror and sorrow. She explained that she and Sarah had been trapped in a predatory debt ring on the rough edge of town, forced to work off impossible loans under the watchful eye of a ruthless man named Marcus. Sarah had secretly given Jessica her most prized possession—the locket—and told her to find the jeweler named Walter if she ever managed to escape.

"She told me you would save us," Jessica wept. "But Marcus is looking for me. If he finds out I came here, he will hurt Sarah. We have to go now!"

Without hesitation, Walter grabbed his coat and car keys. The fear that had paralyzed him for ten years transformed into a fierce, protective rage. He followed Jessica out into the torrential rain, driving in tense silence toward the dilapidated industrial district. They parked near an abandoned warehouse, its dark windows staring like empty eyes. Jessica pointed toward a faint, flickering light in the basement. They stepped out into the cold air, but before they could reach the entrance, a heavy hand clamped down on Walter's shoulder.
