Previously: Dr. Claire Moretti's Christmas Eve shift turns deadly when her husband arrives with his pregnant mistress. But as secrets unravel, Claire hides one of her own—she's carrying his child. What happens next will shatter everything.

The Confrontation I Never Saw Coming

I retreated to the staff break room, leaning against the door as my knees finally gave out. The cold tile floor pressed against my back, and I stared at the ceiling, trying to remember how to breathe. I was pregnant. My husband's mistress was pregnant. And Vincent was somewhere in my hospital, playing the devoted partner to another woman.

I pulled out my phone, scrolling to the photo that had haunted me for weeks. The blonde woman, the hotel, his hand on her back. It was her. It was Vanessa. I had hoped, foolishly, that it was a mistake. That the photo was taken out of context. But now, seeing her in my ER, I knew the truth.

My phone buzzed with a text from Rebecca, my attorney. Need to talk. Call me when you can. I ignored it. I couldn't think about lawyers or divorce right now. I had a job to do.

When I returned to the ER, Vincent was standing outside Vanessa's room, his arms crossed. He looked up as I approached, and for a moment, I saw guilt flash across his face. Then it was gone, replaced by a mask of calm.

"Claire, we need to talk."

"No," I said, walking past him. "We don't."

He grabbed my arm, his grip firm. "Please. Just give me five minutes."

I yanked my arm away. "Five minutes? For what, Vincent? To explain why you're here with your pregnant girlfriend on Christmas Eve?"

His jaw tightened. "It's not what you think."

"It never is," I said, my voice low and dangerous. "But I'm not stupid. I've seen the hotel receipts. The restaurant bills for two. The photos."

Vincent's eyes widened. "How long have you known?"

"Long enough to know you're a liar."

I turned to walk away, but he called out, "She's not my girlfriend. She's my wife."

The words hit me like a physical blow. I stopped, my back to him, and felt the floor tilt beneath my feet. "What?"

"Vanessa is my wife," he repeated, his voice barely above a whisper. "We've been married for two years."

I spun around, my heart pounding so hard I thought it would crack my ribs. "You're married to her?"

"It's complicated."

"Complicated?" I laughed, a bitter, hollow sound. "You've been living a double life, Vincent. You married me five years ago, and you've been married to her for two. How is that complicated?"

He ran a hand through his hair, looking everywhere but at me. "I made a mistake. I was in love with her before I met you, but we broke up. When I met you, I thought I was over her. But then she came back, and I…"

"You what?" I demanded.

"I got her pregnant," he said. "And I couldn't abandon her."

"But you could abandon me," I said, my voice cracking. "You could leave me on Christmas Eve without a word, while you're playing happy families with someone else."

He reached for me, but I stepped back. "Don't touch me."

"Claire, I'm sorry. I never meant to hurt you."

"You never meant to hurt me?" I said, my voice rising. "You've been lying to me for two years. You've been sleeping with another woman, calling her your wife, and now she's pregnant. And I'm—" I stopped, the words catching in my throat.

"You're what?" he asked, his eyes narrowing.

I took a deep breath. "I'm pregnant too, Vincent. I'm carrying your child."

The silence that followed was deafening. Vincent stared at me, his face a canvas of shock, disbelief, and something that looked like fear. "You're… you're pregnant?"

"Yes," I said, my voice steady now. "Eight weeks. Just like her."

He staggered back, bracing himself against the wall. "Oh my god."

"Yeah," I said, my voice dripping with sarcasm. "Oh my god indeed."

I turned and walked away, leaving him standing there, his world crumbling around him. I had revealed my secret, but I knew it wasn't over. There was more to this story, more secrets buried beneath the lies. And I was about to uncover them all.

I went to the on-call room and locked the door. I sat on the bed, my hands shaking, and pulled out my phone. I called Rebecca.

"I need to see you," I said. "Tomorrow. I have news."

"What kind of news?" she asked.

"The kind that changes everything."

I hung up and stared at the wall. Vincent had a wife. A pregnant wife. And I was carrying his child too. This was a mess of epic proportions, and I had no idea how to untangle it.

But I was determined to find out the truth, no matter how much it hurt.
