The Steps of St. Jude’s

The biting wind whipped snow around the colossal, gothic limestone steps of St. Jude’s Cathedral. It was freezing winter dusk, and the only light came from a flickering streetlamp casting a harsh amber glow. Heavy, wet snowflakes swirled, reflecting off the glistening black ice that coated the worn stone treads. The air was filled with the desolate sound of the wind howling, punctuated by the distant, mournful wail of ambulance sirens. Amidst this bleak scene stood Tommy, a quiet orderly in oversized teal scrubs beneath a ragged wool coat. His hands were red and raw from the cold, clutching a crumpled blood gas telemetry sheet. He hunched his shoulders, a subtle, almost imperceptible rocking motion betraying his discomfort with the overwhelming sensory input of the harsh environment. His gaze, however, was sharp, hyper-perceptive, missing nothing.

Suddenly, Dr. Gregory Thorne, chief of pediatric surgery, descended the steps with furious purpose. His immaculate charcoal cashmere overcoat and silk scarf seemed impervious to the blizzard. He carried an embossed leather medical briefcase, a symbol of his authority. His stride was aggressive, his boots crunching loudly on the frozen slush. Without a glance, he brushed past Tommy. “Get out of my way, orderly,” Thorne commanded, his voice dripping with biting arrogance. “The senator’s daughter is crashing, and you don’t even belong in my surgical wing!” Tommy remained silent, his mouth firmly closed, eyes darting, overwhelmed. His chin quivered, and his breath hitched violently in the frigid air.
