Previously: A cruel orphanage director shoves Mateo aside as wealthy visitors arrive. But when the boy's palm reveals a birthmark matching a family crest, the Sterlings realize they've found their long-lost son—and the director's fate is sealed.

Marcus Sterling Walked Into the Library, and the Family Locket Around His Neck Confirmed the Worst

Two days passed. Mateo began to smile, shyly, at Eleanor’s gentle jokes and Arthur’s clumsy attempts to braid his hair. But the shadow of Marcus hung over them like a storm cloud.

Then, on the third morning, the library door opened, and Marcus Sterling stepped inside.

The Orphan’s Birthmark Matched the Billionaire’s Locket—and the Director’s Face Went Pale

He was older, grayer, but the sharp jawline and the cold eyes were unmistakable. A gold locket hung from his neck—identical to Arthur’s.

Arthur shot to his feet. “You.”

Marcus held up a hand. “Brother. I’m here to make this right.”

Eleanor pulled Mateo behind her, her eyes blazing. “Make this right? You stole our son!”

Marcus’s face twisted. “I didn’t steal him. I saved him.”

Arthur laughed, bitter. “From what? From his own father?”

“From you,” Marcus said, his voice low. “You were never there, Arthur. You were always at the office, always chasing the next deal. I saw the way you ignored him. I thought—I thought the boy deserved better.”

Arthur’s fist clenched. “You don’t get to decide that.”

Marcus’s eyes softened, and for the first time, he looked tired. “I know. I’ve regretted it every day. But I was too proud to come back. And when I saw the news about Sallow, I knew I had to.”

He reached into his pocket and pulled out a worn photograph—a young Marcus holding baby Mateo, smiling. “I never meant to hurt him. I just wanted to be the father I thought you should have been.”

Eleanor’s anger flickered. She looked at the photo, then at Marcus, and her voice trembled. “He’s not your son, Marcus. He’s ours.”

Marcus nodded, his shoulders sagging. “I know. I’m not here to fight. I’m here to tell you the truth—and to turn myself in.”

Arthur stared at his brother, the hatred warring with something else. “Why now?”

“Because I saw the way he looked at you,” Marcus said. “The way he smiled when you held him. He’s happy, Arthur. He’s where he belongs.”

He pulled a USB drive from his pocket. “This has everything—Sallow’s payments, the forged documents, my confession. I’ll serve time. I’ll do whatever it takes. Just… let me say goodbye.”

Arthur looked at Mateo, who was peeking around Eleanor’s coat. The boy’s eyes were wide, uncertain.

“Uncle?” Mateo whispered.

Marcus’s face crumbled. He knelt, his hand trembling. “Hey, buddy. I’m sorry. I’m so sorry.”

Mateo didn’t move. Then, slowly, he walked forward and wrapped his small arms around Marcus’s neck. “It’s okay. Mommy said family forgives.”

Arthur’s breath caught. Eleanor’s tears flowed freely.

Marcus held the boy tight, then gently pulled away. “You be good, okay? You’re a Sterling now. That means something.”

He stood, wiped his eyes, and turned to the detective waiting by the door. “I’m ready.”

As the door closed behind him, Arthur lifted Mateo into his arms. The boy rested his head on Arthur’s shoulder, and for the first time, Arthur felt whole.

“Dad?” Mateo murmured.

Arthur’s voice cracked. “Yeah, son?”

“Can we get a dog?”

Arthur laughed, tears streaming down his face. “We can get a hundred dogs.”

Eleanor wrapped her arms around them both, and the library, once cold and silent, seemed to fill with light.

That night, Arthur sat by Mateo’s bed, watching the boy sleep. He thought of Marcus, of the lies and the loss, and he made a vow.

No more secrets. No more silence.

Family wasn’t about blood—it was about showing up, every single day.

And Arthur Sterling would never miss another moment.
