Previously: At a gala, a dean shames a 7-year-old orphan. But when he lifts his sleeve, the billionaire's wife gasps — two boys, one birthmark, and a secret that will shatter the Rosewood family forever.

The Dean's Trembling Hands Gave Him Away

The Rosewood mansion felt like a palace compared to the cramped foster home Ethan had known all his life. He walked through the marble foyer, his hand clasped tightly in Evan's, while Julian and Victoria trailed behind them, still dabbing at their eyes. The staff had prepared a guest room with fresh sheets and a view of the garden, but no one could think about sleep.

"I don't understand," Ethan said, stopping in the middle of the hallway. "If you're my parents, why did I grow up in foster care?"

Victoria's face crumpled. Julian put a steadying hand on her shoulder. "We were told you died," he said, his voice rough. "A nurse came to our room that night. She said there were complications, that you didn't make it."

"But I didn't die," Ethan said, his small brow furrowing. "I've been alive this whole time. I've been waiting for someone to come for me."

Julian knelt down and took both boys' hands. "I promise you, Ethan, we are going to find out who did this. And they will pay."

The family lawyer arrived within the hour, a sharp-eyed woman named Margaret Chen who had handled the Rosewood estate for two decades. She spread photographs across the mahogany conference table — hospital records, birth certificates, and a grainy security still from the maternity wing.

"This is the night you were born," Margaret said, pointing to a figure in the image. "That's Dean Hargreaves, then a junior administrator at the hospital. He's holding a bundled infant."

Ethan leaned forward, studying the photo. "He handed me to a nurse."

"Not a nurse," Margaret corrected. "A woman who ran a private adoption ring. She took you to a licensed foster home under a false name."

Evan's face went pale. "So he stole Ethan?"

"It appears so," Margaret said grimly. "And he's been monitoring your family for years, probably to make sure the secret never came out."

Julian slammed his fist on the table. "I want him arrested. Tonight."

"We need evidence," Margaret said. "A photograph isn't enough. But there's something else." She pulled out a faded note card from a file folder. "This was found in the orphanage's records. It's a letter from the dean to the adoption ring, dated a week after your birth."

She slid it across the table. Julian read it aloud, his voice shaking: "'The boy is healthy. He will be placed with the Hendersons. Ensure he never learns of the Rosewoods. The inheritance must remain with the single heir.'"

"Inheritance," Victoria breathed. "He wanted Evan to have everything. He thought a second son would complicate the trust."

Ethan looked up at his brother. "You're the heir," he said quietly. "I'm the spare."

Evan grabbed his arm. "You're my brother. That's all that matters."

But Ethan pulled away, his eyes hardening. "The dean threw me out of his school last year. He said I was 'a stain on the academy's reputation.' He knew who I was the whole time."

Julian's jaw tightened. "He'll never hurt you again."

The next morning, they drove to the academy with two police officers and Margaret Chen. The dean was in his office, sipping tea like nothing had happened. When he saw the entourage, his teacup clattered against the saucer.

"Mr. Rosewood," he said, forcing a smile. "To what do I owe this unexpected pleasure?"

Julian didn't smile back. "You know exactly why we're here, Hargreaves."

"I have no idea what you mean." The dean's voice trembled.

Ethan stepped forward, pulling the half-medallion from his pocket. "You told me I didn't belong here. You were right. I belong with my family."

"Your family," the dean sputtered. "You're a — you're an orphan."

"No," Julian said, stepping between them. "He's my son. And you're under arrest for kidnapping, fraud, and conspiracy."

The dean's face went white. "You can't prove anything."

Margaret held up the letter. "This is your handwriting. And we have the nurse's testimony. She's been waiting for years to clear her conscience."

Hargreaves sagged into his chair. "I did what I thought was best," he whispered. "The family needed only one heir. Two boys would have split the empire."

"You took my child," Victoria said, her voice icy. "You made me grieve for a son who was alive. You will rot in prison for that."

The officers cuffed him and led him out. As they passed, the dean looked at Ethan, his eyes full of something that might have been regret — or fear.

Ethan held his gaze. "You never asked what I wanted," he said. "I just wanted a family."

he said. "I just wanted a family."
