The Breath of Life
A tense, suffocating silence fell over the cemetery. The undertakers hesitated, glancing at each other in disbelief, but one look at Arthur’s fierce, desperate expression told them they had no choice. With trembling hands, they stepped forward and began to unscrew the heavy brass latches of the white casket. Evelyn let out a soft, choked gasp and took a step back, her eyes darting toward the cemetery gates.
When the lid was finally lifted, Arthur lunged forward, discarding his umbrella. He looked down at his beautiful daughter, who lay perfectly still, dressed in her favorite white dress. She looked like a sleeping angel, her skin pale and cold. Arthur reached in and pressed his fingers against her neck. At first, there was nothing. But then, he felt it—a pulse, incredibly faint and slow, like the ticking of a dying watch.
"She's warm! Oh my God, she's warm!" Arthur cried out, tears streaming down his face. "Call an ambulance! Now!"
A doctor who was among the mourners rushed forward, pushing through the crowd. He quickly examined Lily, pulling a small flashlight from his pocket. "Her pupils are reacting, but her breathing is dangerously shallow," the doctor announced, his voice tight. "She has been heavily drugged. She needs immediate hospitalization."
Arthur turned around, his face contorted in a mixture of joy and blinding rage. "Evelyn," he whispered. But when he looked beside him, his wife was already running toward the waiting limousine. "Stop her!" Arthur roared.
The security guards, realizing the gravity of the situation, immediately pursued the fleeing woman. They tackled her to the wet grass just as she reached the car door. Evelyn screamed and cursed, her elegant facade completely shattered.
Arthur walked over to the young boy, Leo, who was standing quietly in the rain. Arthur knelt in the mud, grabbing the boy's shoulders. "Who are you? How did you know this?" he asked, his voice cracking.
"My mom was your housekeeper," Leo whispered, shivering. "Evelyn fired her last week. But before we left, I saw her put blue drops into Lily's medicine bottle. I heard her say Lily would sleep forever."
