Previously: At a charity gala, a ragged orphan girl is mocked by a haughty chairwoman—until a half-medallion and a birthmark reveal she's the long-lost twin of a billionaire's daughter.

The Birthmark That Broke a Fortune

In the darkness, I felt Charlotte's hand find mine. We pressed our wrists together, the matching birthmarks like a beacon, and I whispered, “Whatever happens, we stick together.” She nodded, her small body trembling.

Christian’s voice cut through the blackness. “Everyone, get down! Now!”

We dropped to the floor, and I heard the shatter of glass, the thud of footsteps. A flashlight beam swept across the room, and a man’s voice boomed, “Where is the girl?”

Hannah pulled me and Charlotte behind the marble counter of the kitchen, her arm shielding us. Margaret was shouting something, but her words were drowned by the sound of furniture being overturned.

Then the backup lights flickered on, and I saw him—a tall man in a black ski mask, holding a crowbar. He lunged toward us, but Christian tackled him, and they crashed to the ground. The man’s mask slipped, and I caught a glimpse of his face. It was someone I had seen before, in the gala crowd. He was one of Lady Vane’s aides.

“She’s the key to the Vale fortune,” the man spat, struggling against Christian. “The old will had a clause—if a second child ever appeared, the entire estate would go to her, not to you.”

I felt the ground tilt. The fortune? The estate? I didn't want any of it. I just wanted a family.

Christian pinned the man down, his voice cold. “The will was rewritten six years ago. There is no such clause.”

The man laughed, a chilling sound. “You think you rewrote it? Lady Vane forged your signature. The original still stands. And now that Chloe’s alive, she owns everything. The company. The money. The name.” He looked at me with a twisted smile. “Congratulations, little heiress.”

Hannah gasped, pulling me closer. “That’s not true. That can’t be true.”

Margaret stepped forward, holding up the letter. “It is true. I have the original will, hidden away. I was paid to make sure Chloe never surfaced, but I couldn’t live with the guilt any longer.” She handed it to Christian, who read it with shaking hands.

“It’s genuine,” he said, his voice hollow. “The signature is mine—forged, but a perfect copy. The date is six years ago. Chloe is the rightful heir.”

I stared at him, my mind spinning. I didn't want to be an heiress. I wanted to be a daughter. A sister. A normal girl with a normal life. But the world had other plans.

Christian looked at me, his eyes softening. “We will challenge this in court. But for now, you are a Vale. You are our daughter. And no piece of paper will ever change that.”

The police arrived minutes later, arresting the intruder and Margaret, who had confessed to her part. Lady Vane was formally charged, and her empire began to crumble. But as the news spread, the world watched a different story—the story of two twins, reunited against all odds, and the family that had to fight to keep them both.

In the months that followed, I learned what it meant to be loved. I had a room of my own, filled with books and toys, and a sister who held my hand every night. Christian and Hannah never treated me like a stranger, only like a missing piece that had finally clicked into place.

And when I asked them why they didn't just give me the fortune and be done with it, Christian knelt down, his eyes sincere. “Because you are our daughter, Chloe. The fortune is just a number. But you and Charlotte—you are our whole world.”

I looked at my wrist, at the birthmark that had always set me apart. It wasn't a curse. It was a homing signal, leading me back to the family I was always meant to have. And as I pressed my wrist against Charlotte's, I knew I had found my place.

Some secrets are meant to be uncovered. Some lies are meant to be broken. And some love, once found, is worth any fortune in the world.
