Previously: A wheelchair-bound billionaire scoffs when a barefoot orphan kneels at his feet, claiming she can heal him. But when she touches his ankle, a nerve twitch changes everything—and reveals a locket that shatters his world.

The Locket That Held a Second Secret

Lily sat on the edge of my bed, her small legs swinging over the side, the locket clutched in her hands. I wheeled closer, my mind still reeling from Julian's arrest. The police had taken him away, and the chateau felt lighter, but the weight of the past pressed on my chest.

"Daddy," Lily said, her voice so small it made my heart ache. "I have something else to show you."

She opened the locket, and behind Evelyn's portrait, there was a tiny, folded piece of paper, yellowed with age. My hands shook as I took it from her.

The handwriting was Evelyn's—I'd know it anywhere. The note read: "My darling Sebastian, if you're reading this, I'm gone. Julian found out about the money, and I know he won't let me live. But I've hidden the evidence—the real ledger, the one that proves everything. It's in the wall safe behind the painting in our old bedroom, the one with the rose. I love you, and I know you'll find our Lily. She's the key. Trust her. —Evelyn."

Tears streamed down my face as I finished reading. "She knew," I whispered. "She knew she was in danger, and she still protected you."

Lily nodded, her eyes glistening. "Mommy made me promise not to open the locket until I found you. She said you'd know what to do."

I pulled her into my arms, the paper pressed between us. "She was the bravest woman I ever knew," I said, my voice breaking. "And you're just like her."

We drove to the old house that evening, the one I'd boarded up after the explosion. The garden was overgrown, the windows dark, but I rolled through the front door with Lily by my side. The painting of the rose still hung in the bedroom, dust-covered but intact.

I wheeled to the wall, my fingers pressing against the frame. Behind it, a small safe—one I'd forgotten existed. I entered the code, and the door swung open to reveal a leather-bound ledger, its pages filled with Julian's handwriting, detailing every fraudulent transaction.

"This is it," I said, holding it up. "This will bury him."

Lily clapped her hands. "Mommy said you'd find it!"

I laughed, a sound I hadn't made in years. "Your mommy was always right."

We returned to the chateau, where the police had taken Julian into custody, the ledger providing all the evidence they needed. The trial was swift, and Julian was sentenced to life in prison for murder and fraud. The Cole family name was restored, but more importantly, I had my daughter back.

Months passed, and the chateau filled with laughter again. Lily started school, her barefoot days behind her, but she still wore the locket under her dresses. And I—I began physical therapy, the nerve point she'd pressed sparking a fire in my legs that wouldn't die.

One evening, as the sun set over the Gironde, I stood at the balustrade, my hand resting on a cane, Lily running toward me with a butterfly net. "Daddy, look!" she shouted, laughing.

I smiled, the ache in my legs a small price for the joy on her face. "I'm looking, sweetheart."

She threw her arms around me, and I hugged her tight, the locket pressing against my chest. "I miss Mommy," she whispered.

"So do I," I said, kissing her head. "But she's always with us, in our hearts, and in the way we love each other."

And in that moment, I knew that some gifts were never truly lost. They just waited for the right hands to hold them.
