The silence in the snowy courtyard was deafening. Sarah stood up slowly, her knuckles white as she gripped the wooden box. The engraved date on the silver rattle burned into her mind. She looked from the rattle to the little girl, whose name was Lily, and then to her mother, Margaret.

"Mother, what is this?"

Sarah demanded, her voice shaking with a mixture of confusion and rising panic.

"Where did this girl get my daughter's rattle? You told me she was buried with it!"

Margaret's pale face flushed with anger, trying to mask her obvious terror. She stepped forward, her expensive leather boots clicking sharply.

"Sarah, don't be absurd. It is just a street beggar trying to scam us. Give that trash back to her and come inside immediately,"

Margaret commanded, her voice cold and unyielding.

But Sarah could see the truth written in her mother's frantic eyes. She knelt back down to Lily's level, wrapping her arms around the shivering child.

"Lily, please tell me. Who gave you this box?"

she asked, tears finally spilling over her own lashes.

Lily pointed a trembling finger directly at Margaret.

"The lady in the dark coat. She used to visit the orphanage. She told the headmistress to keep me hidden, but the sweet nurse who took care of me kept this box for me. She told me to find the woman in the ivory coat before she died."

The truth struck Sarah like a physical blow. Her mother, the matriarch of the family, had stolen her newborn daughter and paid to have her hidden away in an orphanage, all to maintain control over the family inheritance.

"How could you?"

Sarah screamed, standing up to confront Margaret.

Desperate to protect her secret, Margaret signaled her private security guards.

"Remove this child from my property, now!"

she barked. Two large men stepped forward, physically blocking Sarah and Lily, threatening to separate them once again.
