Daddy's Got You Now

Three days passed in a blur of safe houses and silent phone calls. Marcus had called in every favor he had, every private security contact, every ex-military friend. But David had vanished.

Lily slept in their bed each night, sandwiched between them, her small hand wrapped around the locket. Clara watched her breathe, memorizing every detail of her face—the curve of her nose, the way her eyelashes fluttered in her dreams.

The Orphan's Locket: A Billionaire's Unannounced Visit Changed Everything

On the fourth morning, Marcus got a call. "We found him," his security chief said. "He's at the old warehouse on 5th Street. He's alone."

Marcus didn't hesitate. He kissed Lily's forehead, told Clara to stay, and left with two guards. But Clara couldn't stay. She called a cab, her heart pounding.

When she arrived, the warehouse was dark and cold. Marcus was already inside, facing David across a concrete floor littered with old machinery. David looked older—gaunt, with haunted eyes and a nervous twitch.

"You took my daughter," Marcus said, his voice quiet but deadly.

"I took her to protect her," David replied. "You don't know what your father did."

"My father?" Marcus's brow furrowed.

"He was embezzling from the company," David said. "He used Lily as leverage. If I didn't take her, he would have hurt her to keep you in line."

Clara stepped out of the shadows. "That's a lie."

David turned, his eyes widening. "Clara. You shouldn't be here."

"Why not?" she demanded. "To hear more of your stories?"

"He was going to sell her," David said, his voice cracking. "I heard him on the phone. He had a buyer lined up. I couldn't let that happen."

Marcus's fists clenched. "So you took her and left her with that monster Brenda?"

"I paid her to keep her safe!" David shouted. "I didn't know she was abusive. I didn't know!"

Clara stepped closer, her hand on the locket. "You could have come to us. You could have told us the truth."

"Your father threatened to kill you both if I did," David whispered. "He had people everywhere."

Marcus pulled out his phone. "Then we'll go to the police. We'll expose him."

David shook his head. "He's already dead. Heart attack three years ago. But his lawyer has a letter—a confession. He wrote it before he died. It's in a safe in his office."

Marcus and Clara exchanged glances. "We're done running," Marcus said. "We're going to get that letter, and we're going to clear your name."

But David laughed bitterly. "It's not my name that needs clearing. It's yours. He blamed you for everything. He wrote that you stole from the company."

Marcus's face went pale. "That's not true."

"I know," David said. "But the board doesn't. They'll believe him. They'll take everything from you."

Clara stepped in front of Marcus. "Then we'll fight it. We have one thing your father didn't—the truth."

David looked at her, tears in his eyes. "I'm sorry. I'm so sorry for everything."

Marcus's jaw tightened. "You can make it right. Come with us. Tell the police everything."

David nodded slowly. "I will. But first, let me see her. Lily."

Clara shook her head. "Not yet. She's been through enough."

David's shoulders slumped. "I understand."

They left the warehouse together, and Clara called the lawyer. The letter was real. The confession was real. Marcus's name was cleared, and David was granted immunity for his testimony against his father's estate.

A month later, in a quiet ceremony, Lily legally became Lily Vance. She wore a new dress, but she still clutched the locket. Clara knelt beside her in their garden, the late afternoon sun warming their faces.

"You're safe now," Clara said. "And you always will be."

Lily looked up, her eyes bright. "I know," she said. "Daddy's got me now."

Marcus walked over, scooped her up, and spun her around. "Forever and always, sweetheart."

And as the sun set, the locket caught the light, gleaming like a promise kept.

Some secrets are meant to stay buried. But some truths, no matter how painful, are meant to set you free.
